Did Benedict XVI Really Deny Co-Authoring a New Book in Defense of Priestly Celibacy?

By David Martin

The news broke Monday concerning a new book co-authored by Cardinal Robert and Benedict XVI, titled From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy, and the Crisis of the Catholic Church, in which the former pontiff staunchly defends priestly celibacy.

Among other things, Benedict says in the book that the renunciation of all things is a criterion for entering the priesthood, pointing out that from the first century "men could only receive the sacrament of Holy Orders if they had committed themselves to sexual abstinence."

It was reported Tuesday that Benedict XVI has requested of Ignatius Press, the English publisher of the book, that he be removed as co-author. In comments to the Italian news agency ANSA, Benedict XVI’s confidant and personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, said he has "acted on instructions from the pope emeritus and asked Cardinal Robert Sarah to contact the book’s publisher and request that they remove Benedict XVI’s name as co-author of the book, and remove his signature from the introduction and conclusion."

Whether this request comes from Benedict XVI or Ganswein was pressured into saying this remains to be seen, but there is no question that the liberal Vatican bureaucracy is behind this move to remove Benedict as co-author. According to Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Cardinal Sarah’s intervention in getting this book published “has provoked, so to speak, the anger of hell.”

Critics of the book say it "opposes” Pope Francis by raising "specter of a parallel magisterium" when in fact the book upholds the true Magisterium against Francis' counter-magisterium.

What is certain is that Benedict XVI previously approved the book. Cardinal Sarah, who heads  the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship, issued a statement Tuesday confirming Benedict's foreknowledge and approval of the book. Therein he states: "After various exchanges in view of the development of the book, on November 19, I finally sent a manuscript, the cover, a common introduction and conclusion, the text of Benedict XVI and my own text."

The cardinal adds: "On November 25, the Pope Emeritus expressed his great satisfaction with the texts written in common, and he added the following: ‘For my part, I agree that the text should be published in the form you have foreseen.’”

This sharply contradicts Archbishop Ganswein's statement to ANSA, in which he says that Benedict "did not approve a project for a co-authored book, and that he had not seen or authorized the cover."

Ignatius Press has stood by the co-authorship and cover. In a statement released Tuesday, Mark Brumley, President of Ignatius Press, said: "Ignatius Press published the text as we received it from the French publisher Fayard. Fayard is the publisher with whom we have collaborated on three other Cardinal Sarah titles. The text we received indicates the two authors are Benedict XVI and Cardinal Sarah. That text also indicates that Benedict XVI co-authored an introduction and a conclusion with Cardinal Sarah, as well as his own chapter on the priesthood, wherein he describes how his exchanges with Cardinal Sarah gave him the strength to complete what would have gone unfinished.”

Continuing, he says: "Given that, according to Benedict XVI’s correspondence and Cardinal Sarah’s statement, the two men collaborated on this book for several months, that none of the essays have appeared elsewhere, and that a joint work as defined by the Chicago Manual of Style is  ‘a work prepared by two or more authors with the intention that their contribution be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of a unitary whole,’ Ignatius Press considers this a coauthored publication.”

"Cardinal Sarah indicates the content of the book remains unchanged," the statement concludes. "That content, as noted, includes a coauthored introduction, a chapter by Benedict XVI, and a conclusion coauthored by Benedict XVI and Cardinal Sarah."

Hence there is no question that Cardinal Sarah has spoken truthfully about Benedict's approval and co-authorship of the book, but the question remains as to whether or not Benedict truly denied his co-authorship. Did Benedict XVI shrink or did Ganswein fabricate this concerning him? It appears that the same iron-clad Vatican bureaucracy that forced Benedict's "resignation" in 2013 has now coerced Ganswein into lying to ANSA about Benedict.

We'll never know for sure until we hear it from the horse's mouth, but will we? The thing that would embolden the enemy to advance such a lie would be the foreknowledge that Benedict will no longer be able to speak about this himself, i.e. that he might be drugged or kept under surveillance. Recent photos of Benedict XVI show that he appears rather dazed.

The other possibility is that Pope Benedict might come forward himself to clarify this latest report. For this we pray, and especially, we pray he assertively go on record as co-authoring this fine book in defense of Catholic truth.

Cardinal Sarah: Attacks on Catholic Churches and Mary Statues on the Rise

By Jeanne Smits, Paris correspondent
January 13, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – “Catholics can no longer remain silent.” In a ringing call of awakening, Cardinal Robert Sarah voiced his condemnation of a series of desecrations that have hit Europe and especially France during the past few days. He tweeted on Friday at 4:39 pm, European time:
“Desecrations are on the rise in Europe. Recent acts targeting statues of the Virgin Mary in French churches, show the extent to which these gestures are the result of barbaric hatred. They call for reaction. Catholics can no longer remain silent. +RS”
A wave of profanations took place in southwest France on Thursday morning, where no less than five statues of the Virgin Mary were found toppled and smashed in three churches on the territory of the parish of Christ the Savior.

Benedict XVI Defends Celebacy in New Book

Edit: NPR mad. Thanks to Damian. Some bishops resent defenders of celibacy, because they want to perform a same-sex marriage on themselves.
[NPR] Retired Pope Benedict XVI, who promised to remain silent when he resigned as head of the Roman Catholic Church seven years ago, has stepped back into the ongoing debate over priestly celibacy with a new book defending the traditionalist view.
The surprise move is seen as a rebuke to Pope Francis, who is weighing the possibility of a revolutionary move to relax the strict celibacy requirement for ordination in some South American countries where the shortage of priests is particularly acute.
In the as-yet-unpublished book, whose title translates as From the Depths of Our Hearts, Benedict and his co-author, Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah, defend the "necessity" of celibacy in the priesthood. On Sunday, the French newspaper Le Figaro printed excerpts, which were also obtained by The Associated Press.

Evil Bishop Cancels Catholic Faith in His Diocese: Abolishes the Creed

Edit: they have been doing this at liberal parishes for ages. It’s also a Liturgical Abuse, but liceity isn’t an important feature of the rule of these dishonest princes of the Church.

ROME (ChurchMilitant.com) - A cathedral congregation is expressing bewilderment after the bishop announced he was omitting the Nicene Creed so as not to offend non-Catholics present.
After preaching his homily on the Feast of the Epiphany, Bp. Derio Olivero of the diocese of Pinerolo made the announcement about the omission.
"Since there are also non-believers, everyone will say it silently," Olivero told his flock at the Cathedral of St. Donatus in Pinerolo, a town in Piedmont, near Turin. "Those who believe can say it, and those who don't believe or have other beliefs will silently contemplate the reasons for their beliefs."

Franciscans Feature Bloodthirsty Pachamama

The Pachamama is an indecent and ugly pagan imagehat has nothing to do with the purity and majesty of the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven and Earth!

A recent Christmas greeting from the Franciscans International featured the pagan goddess Pachamama together with the Virgin Mary.

According to LifeSiteNews, the executive director Fr. Markus Heinze OFM defended the greeting saying, "Regarding your accusation of the message of the Christmas Card, I don’t want to go into details, I just don’t understand why you see it as a sacrilege to bring Mary together with the pagan symbol for mother earth while we are all used to put a donkey next to the newborn Jesus…"
Sign here to voice your disgust with the Franciscans International group putting a pagan idol on the same level as the Blessed Virgin Mary!

The "Pachamama," is an indecent naked and pregnant idol of the goddess of fertility representing "mother earth."

How dare they place, this false idol on equal footing with the Blessed Virgin Mary!

Our Blessed Mother is the masterpiece of all of God’s creation. This indecent and ugly pagan image has nothing to do with the purity and majesty of the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth!
Sign here to tell Franciscans International that this is not acceptable and is offensive to Catholics, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her Divine Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Time Magazine Loves Two Popes Propaganda Piece

Edit: even homophile Robber Baron didn’t like this movie on his Turd on Fire blog. As usual, Time puppets something false to be true. Of course, Robber Baron doesn’t go so far as to describe the scheming of his Old Liberal Bernardinian Patrons of the Sankt Gallen Mafia, against canon law, but he makes some interesting points.

Anyhow, you should probably not be shocked that the publication where Blair Kaiser got his break from Claire Booth Luce is a sly promoter of the progressivist agenda.

Of course the Bugmen and Pedos on Rotten Tomatoes love this film.

[Time] At the world’s oldest institutions, change is never something to be taken lightly. And nowhere is that more true than in the Roman Catholic Church, one of the oldest institutions in the world, where in recent decades the priestly leadership has faced a now-familiar debate: whether, in changing times, to adapt to new expectations or hold fast to the old ways.
That debate is at the center of The Two Popes, a new film from writer Anthony McCarten (Darkest HourBohemian Rhapsody) and director Fernando Meirelles (City of God), now streaming on Netflix. Inspired by true events, the movie centers around Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce), the soon-to-be elected Pope Francis, and the aging Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins). Their ideological and temperamental differences, and the theological debates that spring from them, drive the movie’s action as the leaders spar over the future of 21st-century organized religion. And though much of the movie is fictional, those very real debates have consequences far beyond the cloistered enclave of the Vatican, with the Church’s determinations on issues like celibacy among priests and the role of women in the Church having ramifications for the lives of the world’s more than one billion Catholics.
Here’s the true story behind The Two Popes
Edit: a brief check of the author’s twitter feed reveals him to be a bugman.

January 2: Mohammedans Driven From Granada

The proud moments of our history!  Although self-loathing progressives want you to forget!

On 2nd January 1492, King Boabdil (or Abu `Abdallah Muhammad XII), Sultan of Granada, surrendered Granada, Spain, to the forces of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile following months of siege.
Granada had been the last outpost of Al-Andalus in the Iberian peninsula languishing under the Moors, but then it had been re-conquered by Catholic Spaniards as the final act of the glorious Reconquista which had been a campaign running since the 1200s to expel the Moors out of Spain and North Africa.
Now we are being told that these people can coexist happily with us in a new and progressive world despite all indications that they mean to conquer us.

Attacks Against Christians Skyrocket in 2019

Gatestone Institute reviewed thousands of newspaper reports, police blotters, parliamentary inquiries, social media posts and specialized blogs from Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain. The research shows (see appendices below) that roughly 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries and monuments were vandalized, looted or defaced in Europe during 2019 — which is on track to becoming a record year for anti-Christian sacrilege on the continent.

Mass Celebrated for the First Time in Geneva Cathedral Since 1535

Cardinal Koch describes worship in February as a great symbol of unity

Zurich (kath.net/KAP) In Geneva, the city of Calvin, an ecumenical event of historical importance is imminent: On February 29, 2020 (the coming year is a leap year), a Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Pierre in Geneva for the first time since 1535, by the Catholic Bishop of Geneva-Lausanne-Friborg, Charles Morerod.  The Swiss President of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, Cardinal Kurt Koch, described the upcoming event in a capital of Protestantism as a great symbol of Christian unity.  It was pointed out in Swiss and French media that such a process would have been absolutely unthinkable just a few years ago.

St. Pierre is the main church of the Reformed in Geneva.  Ecumenical hospitality for Bishop Morerod in this church is therefore of particular importance.  According to a sermon by Guillaume Farel, who announced the principles of the Reformation in St. Pierre on August 8, 1535, the signs of Catholic cult had been erased from the Geneva cathedral.  Jean Calvin then worked as a preacher in St. Pierre for 23 years.

Edit: Morerod is an Old Liberal 68er. Not much unity here. The Calvinists will like the sacrilegious Communion in the hand.

Pope Attacks!

Pope Francis appeared irked during a walkabout among the faithful in St. Peter's Square when a woman grabbed his hand. [He probably didn’t like her making the sign of the Cross!]
The 83-year-old pontiff was greeting children and pilgrims on New Year's Eve as he made his way to a Nativity scene in Vatican City.
Video shows him shaking hands with the crowds who were chanting "Pope! Pope! and "Happy New Year!"

He later apologized for his violence against women, by using his angry reaction to highlight a feminist cause celeb.

Credibly Accused Predator Murdered by Victim Housekeeper

Edit: it actually looks like this man’s bishop had as hard a time suspending him from priestly work as the priest himself had with staying away from youthful victims, including the vidtim’s own father. This fits a certain pattern that readers of this blog should be familiar, particularly when it comes to a certain midwestern Monastery that, as Thomas Merton once put it in Seven Story Mountain, is more concerned with its publishing business than prayer.

[Metro UK] A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of torturing and killing a priest by ramming a crucifix down his throat and suffocating him. The youth, 19, is alleged to have been abused by the Catholic priest, Roger Matassoli, as was his father before him. The priest, 91, had been accused of sexually assaulting at least four boys between the years 1960 and 2000 but there are fears he may have had dozens of victims.

Pope Francis announces retrieval of indigenous statues

The Holy See Press Office has provided a transcription of Pope Francis’s remarks concerning several indigenous statues, stolen earlier this week and thrown into the Tiber River. The Holy Father spoke off-the-cuff following the liturgical prayer that opened the afternoon session of the 15th General Congregation of the Synod for the Amazon.

Pope Francis' words
Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the pachamama that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber.
First of all, this happened in Rome, and, as Bishop of the Diocese, I ask pardon of the persons who were offended by this act.
Then, I want to communicate to you that the statues which created such attention in the media, were retrieved from the Tiber. The statues were not damaged.
The Commander of the Carabinieri desires that you should be informed of this recovery before the news is made public. At the moment, the news is confidential, and the statues are being kept in the Italian Carabinieri Commander's office.
The Commander of the Carabinieri has expressed his desire to follow up on any indications that you would like to give concerning the manner of publication of the news, and any other initiative you may want to take in this regard: for example, the Commander said, “the exhibition of the statues during the Holy Mass for the closing of the Synod”. We’ll see.
I have delegated the Secretary of State to respond to this.
This is a bit of good news. Thank you.

Jewish Infiltration of the Catholic Church

Do you want to know what really took place within the Catholic Church, how it happened, and who is responsible for the upheaval of Tradition? Facts are stubborn things. -Original Poster, Robert Semrad

Jewish Infiltration of the Catholic Church: Part 1

Diversity Macht Frei

March 12, 2016

In 1972, Pope Paul VI made an extraordinary remark that drew worldwide attention. He said that the “smoke of Satan has entered the sanctuary of God”, meaning the Catholic church. I can’t help wonder whether, in uttering these words, he was making a regretful admission of guilt on his own part. Because it was under his auspices, in 1965, that the church issued a document called Nostra Aetate, which reversed most of the church’s key and time-honoured teachings on Jews. Overnight, the virile antisemitism of the old Catholic doctrine was replaced by a weak and neutered philosemitism. The Catholic church, one of the Jews’ traditional adversaries, had been taken out of the game. And it happened through infiltration.

BEGIN CITATION

…the church had never in its history looked upon the Jews in the ways specified in Nostra Aetate. A second pioneer in the Christian-Jewish dialogue, the American Paulist Father Thomas Stransky of Milwaukee, who helped draft Nostra Aetate as an advisor at Vatican II, makes the point more radically. The Declaration signaled a “180 degree turnabout,” he said in a speech of 2006, reversing all that the church had thought about Jews since its early days, a time when teachings about Christ’s divinity or the Trinity had yet to be formulated. From the third century at the latest, church authorities taught that the Jews’ destiny was to wander the earth suffering retribution from God for rejecting Christ, serving in their destitution as the most direct evidence that the church’s claims to God’s favor were correct. By acts of discrimination passed by councils through the centuries, the church then created conditions calculated to keep the Jews destitute. This situation was supposed to endure until the end of time when the Jews finally turned to Christ.

The teaching of Vatican II could not have been more different. Beyond saying that the promises— thus the Covenant— made by God with the Jews were still in force, the document asserted— quoting St. Paul’s letter to the Romans— that the Jews remained “most dear” to God. That is, they continued to enjoy God’s favor. This radical shift in teaching worried many, including Father Stransky, who wondered whether Catholics could suddenly assimilate ideas that contradicted everything they had been taught to believe. Yet in 1965, despite insistent urging from the personal theologian of Pope Paul VI, the drafters of Nostra Aetate refused to say that the church must conduct a mission to the Jews, or that the Jews must turn to Christ.

In the statement that the bishops overwhelmingly accepted and Paul VI promulgated as authoritative church teaching— teaching that cannot be rescinded by later popes— the drafters likewise ignored other sections of scripture suggesting that Jews were responsible for Christ’s death (Acts 3: 15) and lived under a curse (Matt. 27: 25), and that the covenant God had made with the Jews was obsolete (Heb. 8: 13). Instead, they shifted the church’s understanding of its relation to the Jews to three chapters of Paul’s letter to the Romans, which contain the Apostle’s most mature reflections on the Jewish people.

…the pages that follow trace the Declaration’s origin from the intellectual milieu out of which this shift to Paul occurred, namely, groups of Catholic anti-Nazis operating in Central Europe in the 1930s. Among them was one of Nostra Aetate’s authors, the priest Johannes M. Oesterreicher, originally a Jew from Moravia, who served as theological consultant at the Vatican Council, but began his struggle against antisemitism in Vienna in 1933. Oesterreicher worked within tiny groups of Catholics who published and spoke out against Nazi ideology from cities just beyond Hitler’s reach, first in Austria and Switzerland, and then France until the German attack in 1940.

At that point, Oesterreicher joined a number of his comrades-in-arms— the philosophers Jacques Maritain and Dietrich von Hildebrand, the political scientist Waldemar Gurian— in exile in the United States. Other collaborators stayed behind in Europe. Oesterreicher’s intellectual sparring partner for three decades, the German theologian Karl Thieme, took refuge near Basel, Switzerland, in 1934, and remained there through the dark war years, continuing to think and write about Christian-Jewish relations.

The theologian Annie Kraus, a Jew who became Catholic in 1942 and inspired Oesterreicher and Hildebrand with pathbreaking thought on antisemitism written in 1933, hid from the Gestapo first in Berlin, then Southern Germany. Others were not so lucky. The priest who baptized Kraus and Oesterreicher, peace activist Max Metzger, was tried and executed for treason in Berlin in 1944. A year earlier the Gestapo arrested Ferdinand Frodl, a Jesuit who wrote about racism for Dietrich von Hildebrand.

…Why the activists surrounding Johannes Oesterreicher got involved in fighting Nazi racial antisemitism is a question of personal biography that we ultimately cannot answer. Yet one fact stands out in their histories: they were converts. This trend did not begin in 1933. From the 1840s until 1965, virtually every activist and thinker who worked for Catholic-Jewish reconciliation was not originally Catholic. Most were born Jewish. Without converts the Catholic Church would not have found a new language to speak to the Jews after the Holocaust.

As such, the story of Nostra Aetate is an object lesson on the sources but also the limits of solidarity. Christians are called upon to love all humans regardless of national or ethnic background, but when it came to the Jews, it was the Christians whose family members were Jews who keenly felt the contempt contained in traditional Catholic teaching. A group called Amici Israel, which emerged in the 1920s at the initiative of the Dutch convert Franziska van Leer, demanded an end to liturgical references to Jews as perfidious and a halt to efforts to “convert” the Jews.

After the war, a new generation of converts joined Oesterreicher (now known as John) and Karl Thieme in their efforts to undo the anti-Judaism on which antisemitism thrived. In Freiburg, Germany, the concentration camp survivor Gertrud Luckner published the Freiburger Rundbrief and enlisted Thieme as her theological advisor. There Thieme developed ideas later taken into the documents of Vatican II. In Paris, Father Paul Démann, a converted Hungarian Jew, began publishing the review Cahiers Sioniens, and, with the help of fellow converts Geza Vermes and Renée Bloch, refuted the anti-Judaism in Catholic school catechisms, especially the idea that Jews lived under a curse. Three years later Miriam Rookmaaker van Leer, likewise a convert (from Protestantism), founded the Dutch Catholic Council for Israel (Katholieke Raad voor Israel), and engaged the priest Anton Ramselaar as her theological advisor. Ramselaar had known the founders of the Amici Israel initiative of the 1920s.

In 1958, Ramselaar, at the suggestion of Ottilie Schwarz (a convert from Vienna) convened an international symposium in Apeldoorn, Holland which brought together the leading Catholic thinkers from France (Paul Démann), Germany (Karl Thieme, Gertrud Luckner), Israel (Abbot Leo Rudloff, Father Jean-Roger Hené), the United Kingdom (Irene Marinoff), and the United States (John Oesterreicher). Besides Ramselaar, all were converts. At its third meeting, in 1960, this group produced theses that were passed onto the new Pope John XXIII— along with recommendations of John Oesterreicher’s Institute for Judeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Oesterreicher founded this institute in 1953 with help from the eminent Chinese legal scholar John C. H. Wu, professor at Seton Hall and a convert to Catholicism. 8 In 1961, Oesterreicher went on to the Second Vatican Council. At one critical moment in October 1964, the priests Gregory Baum and Bruno Hussar joined Oesterreicher to draft the statement that would become the Vatican Council’s decree on the Jews. Like Oesterreicher, Baum and Hussar were converts of Jewish background.
