[TheNewsreaders] A $5 million grant was recently awarded to the world-famous St. John’s University Museum & Manuscript Library, which is the biggest grant in that library’s 56-year history.

The grant was given by Arcadia Fund, which previously gave two generous grants to the library some years ago. Established in 2001 and based in the United Kingdom, the program provides grants to help preserve cultural heritage throughout the world. Its mission statement emphasizes the fragility of both the cultural heritage but also the ecosystem. It states, “Once memories, knowledge, skills, variety and intricacy disappear – once the old complexities are lost – they are hard to replicate or replace.” To that end, Arcadia has so far given $910 million in grants worldwide.

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library fits the Arcadia mission statement nicely. For more than half a century, the library’s leaders, staff and technicians have been visiting repositories of knowledge throughout the world (monasteries, churches, universities, private homes and other places) to preserve manuscripts and other artifacts.

[Politico] After attending a G-7 summit meeting in Bonn, in what was then West Germany, President Ronald Reagan on this day in 1985 made an eight-minute visit to the German war cemetery in Bitburg. Helmut Kohl, the West German chancellor, had suggested the side trip to the cemetery, where some 2,000 German soldiers lie buried, to mark the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. 

Some U.S. Jewish leaders urged Reagan to forgo the visit, especially after it became known that the cemetery also housed the graves of 49 Nazi storm troopers, members of the Waffen-SS. The Nuremberg judicial tribunal, set up to try Nazi war criminals, found the military wing of the SS, all of whom were volunteers until 1943, to be active participants in the Holocaust. 

 In February 1985, the president’s deputy chief of staff, Michael Deaver, toured the Bitburg site, near the Germany [sic] border with Luxembourg. The 32 rows of graves were covered with snow at the time; Deaver failed to notice the headstones belonging to Waffen-SS casualties.

The “Mafia of Sankt Gallen” Julia Meloni’s Book

Whoever wants to understand what is hidden behind the Synod on Synodality, which was opened by Pope Francis on October 10, should not pass up the recently published book by Julia Meloni "The St. Gallen Mafia" (TAN, 2021), which unearths and traces their historical and ideological conditions.

Reading this book is as exciting as a novel, but everything is documented according to a strict historical method.  This aspect deserves to be highlighted at a time when certain conspiracy theories are presented in superficial and sometimes fanciful ways.  To compensate for the lack of evidence, these theories make use of the narrative technique, which appeals to emotions rather than reason, and wins over those who, through an act of faith, have already chosen to believe the improbable.  Julia Meloni, on the other hand, tells the story of a real conspiracy, pinpointing the goal, the means, the places and the protagonists.  It is the story of the “Mafia of Sankt Gallen”, as one of its main representatives, Cardinal Gottfried Danneels, described it (Karim Schelkens / Jürgen Mettepenningen: Gottfried Danneels, Editions Polis, Antwerp 2015).

St. Gallen is a Swiss city where Ivo Fürer was bishop in 1996, who until the year before was General Secretary of the European Bishops' Conference.  In consultation with Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini (1927–2012), Archbishop of Milan, Bishop Fürer decided to invite a group of prelates to draw up an agenda for the Church of the future.  The group met for ten years, from 1996 to 2006. The most important personalities besides Cardinal Martini were Walter Kasper, Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, and Karl Lehmann (1936-2018), Bishop of Mainz, both of whom were to receive the cardinal purple.  Two other future cardinals were later co-opted: Godfried Danneels (1933–2019), Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels, and Cormac Murphy-O'Connor (1932–2017), Archbishop of Westminster.  They were joined in 2003 by the Roman Curial Cardinal Achille Silvestrini (1923–2019), thanks to whom the St Gallen Group became a powerful lobby able to determine the election of a Pope.  A few days after the funeral of John Paul II, the “Mafia of St. Gallen” met at the invitation of Silvestrini in the Villa Nazareth in Rome to agree on an action plan for the next conclave.  On a photo that appeared in The Tablet on July 23, 2005, you can see Cardinals Martini, Danneels, Kasper, Murphy-O'Connor and Lehmann, all "key members and students of the St. Gallen Mafia", next to Cardinal Silvestrini,  as Julia Meloni writes (p. 5).

The original plan was to elect Cardinal Martini to the papal throne, but in 1996, the year the group was founded, the Archbishop of Milan began to experience the first symptoms of Parkinson's disease.  In 2002 the cardinal made the news public by passing the management staff on to Cardinal Silvestrini, who from January 2003 led the major maneuvers with a view to the next conclave.  Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor was in contact with Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and introduced him to the group as a possible opponent of Ratzinger.  Bergoglio received the approval of the “Mafia”, but it was Cardinal Martini himself who had the greatest doubts about his candidacy, not least because of the information he had received from the Society of Jesus about the Argentine bishop.  When Bergoglio's defeat at the 2005 conclave seemed certain, it was perhaps a relief that Cardinal Martini announced to Cardinal Ratzinger that he would make his votes available.  The St. Gallen group met for the last time in 2006, but Martini and Silvestrini continued to exert a strong influence on the new pontificate.  In 2012, Cardinal Kasper spoke of a "south wind" blowing through the Church, and on March 17, 2013, a few days after his election, Pope Francis, unsurprisingly, quoted Kasper as one of his favorite authors and commissioned him to open the extraordinary consistory  on the family in February 2014.

However, Pope Francis disappointed the progressives no less than he irritated the conservatives, and his pontificate is in unstoppable decline after eight years.  But even when the main protagonists of the St. Gallen Mafia are dead, their modernist spirit hovers over the synodal process, while new maneuvers for the next conclave are already underway.  Julia Meloni's book, which reconstructs the history of this “mafia”, helps us understand the opaque dynamics that move the Church today.  I can add a few elements from my own memories.

In the autumn of 1980 a priest of the Roman Curia, Monsignor Mario Marini (1936–2009), not yet 50 years old, intelligent and full of vigor, visited me.  The priest was a collaborator of Cardinal Giovanni Benelli (1921–1982) and watched with concern as those who had been Benelli's enemies occupied more and more key positions in the Vatican and throve in the shadow of Cardinal Agostino Casaroli (1914–1998), Secretary of State of  John Paul II.

Between 1980 and 1981 we had several meetings with Monsignor Marini, during which he explained to me in detail the existence of what he called a “mafia” that surrounded John Paul II, who was elected to the papal throne in 1978.  This Mafia had its “gray eminence” in Monsignor Achille Silvestrini, shadow and alter ego of Cardinal Casaroli, who had succeeded him in 1973 as Secretary of the Council for Public Affairs of the Church: the same Silvestrini whom Julia Meloni presents us as “mastermind” of the Mafia  from St. Gallen.

Silvestrini was an intelligent and interesting man who had represented the Holy See at the Helsinki (1975), Belgrade (1977/78) and Madrid (1980) Conferences, although he did not have the diplomatic experience of a nuncio.  Like many post-conciliar prelates, he was above all a politician who liked to strip off his curial robes in order to have confidential talks outside his premises in the Vatican.  The Vaticanists valued his willingness to pass on confidential information, even if his information, which was evenly distributed between the right and left sides, showed a wise balance between lies and truth.  In international politics he joined the positions of the Bishop of Ivrea, Msgr. Luigi Bettazzi, who advocated the policy of unilateral disarmament.  In domestic politics, he supported the Christian Democratic line, which was "more open" to the Italian Communist Party.  In particular, he cultivated relations with Giulio Andreotti and headed the delegation of the Holy See that concluded the disastrous New Concordat with the Italian state in 1985.  Through Monsignor Francesco Brugnaro, the current retired Archbishop of Camerino, Silvestrini was in close contact with Carlo Maria Martini, Archbishop of Milan, but not yet cardinal, whose future destiny he sensed.  All of this was twenty-five years before the “Mafia of St. Gallen”.

We agreed with the priest to share this information, which was also passed on to John Paul II, and indeed also published through Wanda Poltawska, who became aware of many things through her friendship with Cardinal Edouard Gagnon (1918–2007), a friend of Monsignor Marini.  Some of these revelations have been published by Impact Suisse and Si Si No No magazines and the Courrier de Rome.  Forty years have passed and I fondly remember Monsignor Mario Marini, a priest who has always served the Church with apostolic zeal and who was one of the first to denounce the existence of a “mafia” in the Church.  The reason for this was the successful book by Julia Meloni.  But what did Msgr. Marini say at the time?  That could be the subject of another article.

 Edit: we’ve been calling for some penitence from the Bishops for years, but these kinds of attenuated penance services are more for cameras and the agendas of anti-Catholic organizations and professional victims than to beg for mercy from an angry God.

Another reason they don’t have a ring of truth is that, like a reformed Roman Liturgy, they don’t convey clarity. What exactly are they sorry for, and if they’re sorry, does kneeling for a few minutes in a staged “penance” event pass the test?

WHITE EARTH NATION, Minn. — American Indian children from White Earth Nation and other reservations were sent to boarding schools across the country, starting in the late 1800s. The federal government used the schools to separate Native children from their families, culture and language, part of an effort to assimilate American Indians into white society.

There were at least 16 Indian boarding schools in Minnesota, most operated by religious orders. Many children were deeply traumatized by physical and sexual abuse, punished for speaking their language and stripped of their culture.

“There was a lot lost at that time — loss of culture, loss of identity,” said Joe LaGarde, a White Earth tribal elder. “And that’s all a part of how you take a person’s land. You take away their identity. Once they lose that, it’s a lot easier to deal with them.”

Bishop Vodeholzer Visits Family Plot of Ratzinger Family

In June 2020, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI.  probably last visited this grave of his parents and his sister when he said goodbye to his seriously ill brother Georg Ratzinger.

Diocese of Regensburg (kath.net) The Regensburg bishop visited the family grave of the Ratzinger family on All Souls Day (photo) and prayed there.  In June 2020, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI.  probably last visited the grave of his parents Joseph and Maria and his sister Maria when he said goodbye to his seriously ill brother Georg Ratzinger, who died shortly afterwards.  The Ratzinger family grave is located in the Ziegetsdorf cemetery, near the former home of the future Pope Joseph Ratzinger, who lived in it during his time as a dogmatic professor in Regensburg.  The papal brother Georg Ratzinger was not buried in this grave, but in the foundation grave of the Regensburger Choir in the Lower Catholic Cemetery in Regensburg (see link).

Before visiting the graves, Bishop Voderholzer had celebrated a pontifical High Mass in the parish of Ziegetsdorf.  The two feast days of All Saints' Day and All Souls Day, the bishop said in his sermon according to a press release, would be an occasion to reflect on what we as Christians believe in relation to the “so-called” last things.  The essence of religion is to give an answer not to the question of how I behave correctly in this life, what is good and what is bad, where does everything come from, what it makes sense, but what it all ultimately amounts to, explained Bishop Rudolf.

If religion wants to be the answer, the answer to the ultimate questions of our human existence, then above all it must also give an answer to the reality towards which life tends with inexorable inevitability, death: “Only death gives weight to life, to every decision  before that seriously, death makes life unique.  And yet we experience death as threatening, as destructive.  The answer of our faith is closely connected to Jesus Christ,” emphasized Bishop Voderholzer.

Heaven, Hell and Purgatory are personal categories and do not primarily describe a place, but a relationship, the diocesan bishop continued.  Heaven, let that be communion with God, being allowed to see God face to face.  Definitely safe in eternal love.  That, said the bishop, will exceed all of our expectations, hopes and longings.  Hell can only be the voluntary and definitive rejection of God.  It is not hot [yes it is] there, but ice cold because there is no spark of love there.  One can only hope that the heart of the most disappointed sinner still has a little glow of love that the Spirit of God can kindle to a new fire.

Purgatory, explained Bishop Rudolf, belongs as a phase of preparation for the side of heaven.  It is the intermediate state in which a baptized Christian who has died in the state of grace, but who is still burdened by the consequences of his guilt, is cleansed of all the “dross” of sin.  “This fire is healing and necessary.  According to the English theologian John Henry Newman, we long for it even when we meet the holy God, in whose presence heaven exists.  He created us, he knows us by name, he has written our names in his heart, and so we also recommend the deceased of the past year to him by calling up their names now,” said Bishop Dr.  Rudolf Voderholzer in conclusion.

Old Liberal Satanic Primate of England’s Thoughts on Traditiones Destructes

A July 28 letter of Westminster Cardinal Nichols to Archbishop Roche, the Prefect of the Liturgy Congregation, has been leaked to Gloria.tv (below).

[Gloria.tv] It contains six questions regarding the application of Traditionis Custodes. Nichols asked:
- whether following-up documents on TC will be issued;
- whether TC abrogates the celebration of the other sacraments and the Roman Breviary;
- whether the Novus Ordo calendar must be imposed on the Roman Rite;
- what translations must be used for Roman Rite readings;
- who exactly constitutes a Roman Rite “group” (TC);
- whether TC allows for Roman Rite Requiems according to the 1971 Agatha-Christie indult.

Nichols mentions a canonical interpretation of TC presented by The Latin Mass Society whose raison d’être is the promotion of the Roman Rite (“obviously this is not in accord with the mind of the Holy Father”), and other similar groups (FSSP, Institute of Christ the King). Nichols asks how to deal with them.

Roche’s August 4 reply insists that the use of the Roman Rite is “by way of exceptional concession” and that TC wants a “return” to the [failed] Novus Ordo.

For him, TC allows “pastoral prudence” for “a very limited time only.” He alleges that Summorum Pontificum was “misinterpretated” which caused a “growth” that was “not sanctioned” by Benedict XVI.

Noteworthy is Roche’s anti-Vatican II statement that a greater autonomy of diocesan bishops in liturgical matters was “unhelpful,” thus, Francis disempowered them.

He writes that TC speaks only about the Roman Mass and asks Nichols to consider changes of the calendar “very carefully.” Translations used in the Roman Rite should be taken from the [often manipulated] translations used for the Novus Ordo, and “groups" are for Roche personal parishes and stable congregations.

He doesn’t know about an indult allowing for Requiem Masses and if it would exist, TC had abolished it. After so much legalism and rigidity, Roche states that “this is a moment which demands of pastors a delicacy of care and direction.”

He contradicts Benedict XVI by claiming that Paul VI “abrogated” the Roman Rite which is “at variance with Conciliar reform,” and encourages “an ecclesiology that is not part of the Church's Magisterium.” In other words: For Roche the Vatican II ideology as a new religion.

Roche indulges in clericalism by insisting that the canonical interpretation of TC presented by The Latin Mass Society – which is run by laypeople – “has no standing whatsoever and should not be published as an authorative commentary”- because “the bishops alone” [who were disempowered by Francis] oversee the liturgy.

A British insider commented to Gloria.tv that Cardinal Vincent has been feeding softball questions to Roche and is playing with him “the good cop bad cop routine seen on TV.”
