In What Year Did Herod Die?

Luke was right after all.
by Ruggero Sangalli
One of the frequently quoted historical reference points for chronologicalizing the events reported in the Gospel concerns the year of the death of King Herod the Great: the year 4 BC, at least according to many authors.
Herod the Great
Herod the Great
This year we owe to the writings of Flavius Josephus, who, however, never expressly names them. It is derived from the reigns of Archelaus, Philippos and Antipas, the heirs of Herod. But Flavius Josephus himself provides at least a dozen clues that contradict and render the year useless as Herod's year of death. For example, it was not uncommon to reckon with the successor's reigning years as well as the time when the office was held, but the old king was still alive.
Amazingly, many writers today write that "Herod certainly died in the year 4 BC." They do so with such confidence in Flavius Josephus that they simply ignore many other of his statements, which are much more precise. Flavius Josephus wrote that Herod died at the age of seventy. Similarly, at the age of just 15, Herod was appointed by his father Antipater to be the administrator of Galilee, after he had come to power from Pompey, after the Romans conquered Jerusalem in 63 BC.
We also know that at the time of the Battle of Actium, in September 31 BC, Herod was in the seventh year of his kingship. According to Jewish Antiquities, his reign lasted 37 years, 30 to 31 years after the Battle of Actium. We know that Herod, in the eighteenth year of his reign, after the visit of Emperor Augustus to Syria, for which the Roman historians handed down to us the year 19 BC, resolved to rebuild the temple (the 15th year of his reign, according to the records) in the History of the Jewish War , in which Herod's reign is given as 34 years). In short, in the year 4 BC, Herod was still alive.

Astronomy gives justice to the Evangelist Luke

Astronomy is also in this case an effective tool for determining the timing of historical events. It provides both Flavius Josephus as a historian, and Luke as an evangelist justice, but to the detriment of many modern authors. Flavius Josephus wrote that Herod died about two weeks after a spectacular lunar eclipse and that his funeral took place before the subsequent Jewish Passover. The records of NASA allow us to calculate the exact date of the lunar eclipses of that time and eliminate those that were invisible in Palestine.
Those who insist that Herod died in the year 4 BC look at the darkness of March 13 (according to the Julian calendar) of that year. At that time the 14th Nisan fell on the 12th of April, so 29 days later. After all, however, what Flavius Josephus reports for that period, the time span is too short to be that date. An often overlooked detail: the 13th of March would have been the 14th Adar, a feast day (Purim) associated with the 13th Adar, the day of Nicanor, a feast day since the times of the Maccabees.
Flavius Josephus testifies that just a few days before, two rabbis had instigated an anti-Roman uprising, destroying the gilded eagle that Herod had placed on the outside of the Jerusalem temple. For security reasons, Herodes preferred to bring the two rabbis outside Jericho to Jerusalem, where he was in the spa to heal his physical ailments. He had them burned alive on the very day of darkness ( Jewish Antiquities , chapter XXVII).
Flavius Josephus, The Jewish War
Considering the great respect of the Jews for holy days, which Herod always kept disparaging, but no court could have been found, not even an unlawful one, to pass a verdict on a religious feast (Est 9,17--18), let alone against two well-known rabbis. The entire population would have been scandalized about it. However, Flavius Josephus reported that it was not just any court, but the Highest Court of the Jews, the right-wingers par excellence. He also recalled that Archelaos (co-regent of Antipas and Philippos since the year 4 BC), because of the persistent criticism of the judgment, expressly justified that it was done "in accordance with the law." Even with Jesus, the "law" endeavored to accelerate his execution so that no feast day would be profaned.
The 14th Adar may not have been the date of the lunar eclipse and therefore it is not the year 4 BC that interests us. Herod, an Idumaean, would not have had two rabbis burned on a day when Haman was burned according to the ancient tradition of the Purim festival.

If there are any doubts: Flavius Josephus lists for the period after this "impossible execution" and before the Passover, a series of events that occurred before Herod's death (which occurred about two weeks after the lunar eclipse). However, the dates are incompatible with the few missing days until the 14th Nisan.
So it must have been another lunar eclipse. According to NASA directory, two especially would be in question. The first occurred on the 10th of January of the year 1 before Christ, the second on the 29th of December of the same year. In both cases there would be sufficient time to accommodate all the events that Flavius Josephus mentions between the darkness and the subsequent Passover. A Jewish document, Megillat Taanith, which dates back to the destruction of the temple in the year 70 AD, has been handed down to us. The scrolls contain a list of Jewish festivals. In it are two dates without further information, on which it was forbidden not to celebrate: one is the 7th Kislev, the other of the 2 Shevat.
M. Moise Schwab, through a detailed and intricate study in the 2nd Shevat, pinpointed the death of Herod, exactly two weeks after the lunar eclipse of December 29, the 14th of January of the year 1 AD, according to today's calendar. The lunar eclipse came exactly at dusk, so that everyone could see it. Herod, born 70 BC, ruler since the year 37 BC, was 70 years old, and had ruled 37 years according to the specifications of the Jewish Antiquities. Jesus was born about a year before, at the end of the year 2 BC. Everything fits, at least for those who are willing to take a close look.

Bundeswehr Soldiers Attacked by Men of “Arab-Oriental” Background

BAD HERSFELD. Three men with an "Arab-Oriental" appearance attacked two Bundeswehr soldiers in Bad Hersfeld in Hesse on Wednesday and injured them slightly. First, they attacked a 19-year-old soldier who was walking in uniform.

He met the trio at six in the morning when he was on his way to duty. They insulted him first as "Nazi", "son of a bitch" and "child murderer" and spit on him. When the Bundeswehr members wanted to confront them, they hit him in the face, causing him to go down. Subsequently, the attackers stepped on him.

Federal Armed Servicemembers suffered bruises and a grave wound

Another soldier hurrying to help another managed to pull away one of the thugs, who then fled. The other two then attacked the second soldier and then fled. The Bundeswehr members suffered bruises and an abraision during the attack.

According to the police, the two soldiers described the perpetrators as between 20 and 30 years old, with heavily dark skin and black hair. The victims suspected the perpetrators of being of an "Arab-oriental background," said a police spokesman for the Junge Freiheit. (Ag)

Pilgrimage Director Thanks Socialist Party for His Priestly Vocation

Erwin Reichart, the pilgrimage director of Maria Vesperbild, responds with a friendly invitation to the condescending SPD criticism on the visit of the Bavarian Prime Minister Söder in Maria Vesperbild

Maria Vesperbild (kath.net/Maria Vesperbild) kath.net documents the open letter of the pilgrimage director of Maria Vesperbild, Erwin Reichert, on the criticism of the Günzburger SPD leadership on the forthcoming visit of the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder to Maria Vesperbild in full length:

Dear Mr. Auinger,

Although your press statement is hurtful and condescending, I still want to answer you in an open letter. The Bavarian Prime Minister does not come as a party representative to Maria Vesperbild but as the highest representative of the Bavarian state. That honors us very much. Incidentally, we are thankful for any politician who openly professes Christianity. Therefore, all politicians of each party are invited to make a pilgrimage to Maria Vesperbild. One can take Gregor Gysi as an example who, as a far left politician, clearly stated that a society without religion will not work in the long term.

All SPD members are therefore cordially invited to the feast day service with a procession of lights on August 15, 2018 at 19:00.

As a former worker and son of a worker family, I can tell you that as a teenager I had great sympathy for the SPD. In addition, I owe the SPD my priestly profession.

Therefore I do not mean it mockingly, if I advise you to take the help from above also for the SPD. The Mother of God has done so many miracles here that she can easily make it possible to bring the SPD to new heights.

I would like to receive you here despite the nasty press statement, to talk to you and maybe even to pray with you.

With best wishes and blessings from Maria Vesperbild

Erwin Reichart pilgrimage director

Bergoglian Predator Bishop Insists He’s Done Nothing Wrong

Juan Jose Pineda: “There is Nothing Against Me, I Askedto Resign, Myself”

Edit: sometimes there’s a good reason that people are on the margins.

(Tegucigalpa) Last Saturday, Pope Francis retired the right hand of Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga as Auxiliary Bishop of Tegucigalpa in Honduras. Msgr. Juan Jose Pineda Fasquelle confirmed the impression attached to this retirement.

Msgr. Pineda had been in the headlines since the end of 2017, with the real criticism being directed at the Pope's confidant Cardinal Maradiaga. Pope Francis had sent a confidant to Honduras a year ago to see to it, but remained inactive.

It was not until public pressure became too great that the need to take action in Rome was felt. The Honduran media had reported early, but they were not weighty enough. It was not until the Italian weekly L'Espresso announced the matter that an international response took shape.

The impression: Cardinal Maradiaga supported his suffragan bishop, while Cardinal Maradiaga was supported by Pope Francis. Maradiaga in turn supported the current pontificate. In order for this to continue to be so, the auxiliary bishop now had to give up his office, as the case had become intolerable, apparently to bring the cardinal out of the line of fire. In some ways, the Pineda case recalls the Barros case.

Pineda was retired on Saturday. But no sanctions were announced against him, which surprised observers in Rome and Tegucigalpa. Rather, it was said that he - for some unknown reason - asked for his resignation. The Pope had only met this wish. That's certainly not true.

But Pineda seems so sure of his ropes that he can dare go on the offensive. After announcing his retirement, he frankly asked the media questions. He told the most important newspapers, from El Heraldo to La Prensa to La Tribuna, and radio stations, that he had been retired at his request. He wants to turn to “new tasks.”Above all, he stressed that there are no sanctions against him. He himself had asked Rome for inquiries, which should give the impression of a self-report. That, too, does not correspond to the facts. The thrust is clear.

"There are no charges against me," Pineda said in an interview with TV station TN5.
In view of the media reports about his double life and his financial management, such statements are bold. They can only be explained by the fact that Pineda feels secure that no charge is made against him.

"It is better for one to die than for the whole people to save themselves."
Such a strange, cryptic statement by the former auxiliary bishop.

Anyone who wants to accuse him of something should do so with the competent courts so that he can defend himself. Since there are no such allegations, he has nothing to say about it. In any case, he would not comment on any allegations about the media.

“Gay Liberation” Cardinal Shared Apartment With Evil Aberrosexual Predator Cardinal

[Gloria.tv] Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, 87, who is accused of having fondled seminarians and some minors, has been the big mentor of Cardinal Kevin Farrell, i70, the head of the Dicastery for Laity, Family [sic!] and Life.

McCarrick made Farrell an Washington auxiliary bishop in 2001.

The two liberal prelates even shared an apartment together with two priest secretaries, according to Washingtonian.com (October 2004).

[As Newark Archbishop (1986-2000) McCarrick hired Father Kenneth Martin, a homosexual abuser, as his personal secretary.]

In 2007 Farrell was promoted to Dallas. He even paid tribute to McCarrick in his coat of arms. According to Farrell’s explanation the lion in his coat of arms honours McCarrick and is taken from his coat of arms.

Farrell is pro-gay and in charge of the World Meeting of Families in Dublin in August which will be attended by Pope Francis.

This meeting spreads gay ideologywelcomes homosexual couples and features as keynote speaker the gay-propagandist, Jesuit Father James Martin.

Farrell is a fan of Father Martin’s gay-propaganda book “Building a Bridge”.

It is evident that everyone - including Farrell - knew about McCarrick’s homosexual problem.

Radical Vatican About to Take Vengeance on Father Stefano Manelli

[Gloria.tv]Sanctions against Father Stefano Manelli, 85, the founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, are imminent, writes Marco Tosatti (July 21). Manelli’s order languishes under a Vatican commissioner since July 2013.

The reasons for this crack down, never explained by the Vatican, are evident: for the present Vatican nomenclature, the Friars are “too Catholic”.

According to Tosatti, a document containing sanctions against Manelli, authored by the Congregation for the Religious, is currently on Francis' table.

After the sanctions are imposed, the Vatican will push for a General Chapter. The plan is to change the Friars' constitutions and to abolish the vow of consecration to the Immaculate and the vow of poverty. The latter has created a situation in which all material goods of the friars belong to lay-people. The Vatican has tried in vain to get hold of this patrimony but lost all juridical battles in Italian courts.

Therefore, the Vatican tried to use Father Manelli in order to put pressure on the assets' owners. After this failed, it seems, Francis wants to punish Manelli which reveals Francis’ strange sense of justice.

One of the leading Vatican bureaucrates who fights against the Friars is Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo OFM, the secretariy of the Congregation for the Religious, a Francis intimate, who was one of the main protagonists of the huge financial scandal hitting the Franciscans (OFM) in December 2014. The scandal was quickly hushed up.

Because Carballo is a radical-liberal, nobody touched him, on the contrary, Francis promoted him to become an archbishop.

Gigantic Procession in Russia to Honor the Czar

In the early morning hours of July 17, a huge procession set in motion from the Yekaterinburg, leading 20 kilometers to the basilica, which was held in honor of the tsar's family murdered 100 years ago.

(Moscow) With a gigantic procession in honor of Tsar Nicholas II, Russia's Christians commemorated the murder of the tsarist family by the Communists.

Blood Basilica in Katharinenburg, built at the site of the assassination

In Katharinenburg in the Ural Mountains, hundreds of thousands of Russians participated in a gigantic procession on July 17, which took place on the anniversary and place of the crime. The procession led to the basilica, which was built in honor of the imperial family at the place of their murder. The basilica keeps relics of the last tsar. The murdered Tsar's family was canonized in 2000 by the Russian Orthodox Church, which recognized their murder by the Communists as a martyrdom.

Katharinenburg (Yekaterinburg) is located about 2,000 kilometers east of Moscow. After renouncing the affairs of state, which took place during the February Revolution of 1917, the Czar was interned with his family in Katharinenburg. There he, his wife and five children were murdered by the Bolsheviks in July 1918. The execution command was led by the Communist of Jewish descent Yakov Sverdlov, who acted on the direct orders of Lenin.

On July 17, the gigantic procession set in motion at 4 o'clock in the morning. On the night of the 16th to the 17th of July the murder was done. One hundred thousand participants were needed alone to carry the 100,000 icons (one icon per person) that were carried along. Countless other believers followed the train of the icons, which covered a distance of 20 kilometers. More and more people joined them, so that the procession took on gigantic proportions.

The procession in which the entire Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church participated was led by the Moscow Patriarch Cyril I. in front of the Basilica, the Patriarch celebrated a Holy Mass in memory of the Tsar's family.

The martyrs of Alapayevsk

Grand Duchess Elisabeth, born Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, a martyr of Alapayevsk

Already on July 15 in Alapayevsk, Kyril consecrated in the church of the Theodora Icon, an icon of the Mother of God, with whom Tsar Michael I, the first Romanov on the throne of the Tsar, had been blessed. In 1918, the Communists brought some members of the Tsar's family to Alapayevsk. There they were murdered in a mine near the city, also on 18 July. Among them was Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fyodorovna, who had been born as German Princess Elizabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt in Darmstadt. Following the murder of her husband in 1905 by the assassination of a socialist, she divested all her possessions and founded in Moscow the Women's Order of the Sisters of Charity and Mercy and the Martha Maria Monastery, which she herself entered and led as abbess.

After the White Army was able to recapture Alapayevsk briefly from the Red Army, the bodies of the murdered were born and carried on the retreat to the east and initially buried in Beijing. At the urging of her sister Vikotoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, who was married in Britain, they were transferred to Palestine and interred in the Russian Orthodox Mary Magdalene Monastery in Jerusalem in 1921. Their monastery in Moscow was abolished by the Communists and the sisters were deported to Siberia. Since then, the order no longer exists.

In 1998, the mortal remains of the Tzar's family were solemnly buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The then Russian President Boris Yeltsin called the murder "one of the most shameful parts of our history". In 2008, Tsar Nicholas II was rehabilitated by the Supreme Court of Russia and the family recognized as victims of the "political repression of the Bolsheviks".

The worship of the Tsar's family is deeply felt in Russia. It represents a central element of historical continuity as it overcomes the 70 years of communist tyranny and is an aspect of national identity.

On May 25, 2017, the incumbent President Vladimir Putin also venerated the relics of Tsar Nicholas II. The ceremony took place in Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow.

One century after the massacre, Russia and the world experienced one of the greatest processions of recent history.

Protestant Minister Smashes Marian Statue in Colombia for Feast of Our Lady of Carmel

(Bogota) A video triggered  in Colombia showing a Protestant pastor who destroyed a statue of Mary on the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16.

The incident took place in Santa Cruz de Mompox, a city founded in 1537 in Colombia with today about 45,000 inhabitants. On July 16, the day the Catholic Church commemorates Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Protestant pastor Ospina Gazcon publicly smashed a statue of the Virgin with a hammer.

Catholics of the country reacted indignantly to the desecration. The justifications of certain free-church circles of Calvinist imprint are known. Sadly, according to the faithful of the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in which the incident occurred, these circles did not bother to verify the truthfulness of their prejudices. And that they do not know how to distinguish between veneration and idolatry. They would soon realize how wrong their opinions are, "but their consequences hurt us a lot," said a parishioner forthe daily El Blanco.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an honorary title of the Blessed Virgin Mary and patron saint of the Carmelite Order, whose origins date back to the Crusades, when crusaders withdrew in the Holy Land as hermits to Mount Carmel via Haifa in the early 12th century. There they had already found hermits of Eastern Christian tradition.

The incident in Colombia shows that it’s not only Satanists and Islamists who destroy Mary statues.

So far, no apology from the pastor has become known.
