The International Association of Exorcists (AIE) commented on the recent remarks by the Jesuit general Arturo Sosa Abascal and corrected the "black pope".
On the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Communion and Liberation Union (CL) in Rimini, General Sosa claimed in an interview with the weekly magazine Tempi that the devil does not exist in person or in reality. He was only a "symbolic reality", said the Superior General of the Jesuit Order.
The Exorcist Association is a legal entity based in the Vatican. Already on August 22, the exorcists responded with a detailed response to Sosa Abascal's remarks and affirmed that the devil is a person and exists in reality.
The "Black Pope" attended the CL meeting for an event on "Learning to See the World through the Pope Francis's Eyes".
The statements of the Jesuit general is described by the exorcists as "seriously disorienting". It is not the first time that Sosa Abascal speaks about the devil in this sense. The exorcists answer with "clarifications in the light of the Magisterium" along with the pointed addition "even of the present Pope."
They leave no doubt that Sosa Abascal's statements are "outside the ordinary as well as the solemn, extraordinary magisterium."
It says in the opinion of the AIE:
"The real existence of the devil, as a personal subject who thinks and acts and who has chosen to rebellion against God, is a truth of faith that is part of the Christian doctrine from the beginning. This truth is corroborated by a document of the Congregation of the Faith published in the Osservatore Romano on June 26, 1975. "
The exorcists also refer to the catechesis of Pope Paul VI. November 15, 1972, when he said that "the devil in us and in our world acts as a dark agent and enemy."
Paul VI. continues:
"Evil is not just a deficit, but a living, perverted and perverted spirit. A terrible reality. "
The multiple mention of Pope Francis by the exorcists wants to emphasize the untenability of the position of the Jesuit general, especially because Pope Francis himself is a Jesuit. Sosa Abascal had appeared in Rimini after all as an interpreter of papal thought and action.
According to the exorcists, the doctrine of the Church is that the devil is also a creature created by God, but then, out of free will, rebelled against God and since then has opposed God radically and diametrically. Therefore, the devil is not an absolutely independent principle or even just a symbol of evil. The Scriptures provide sufficient clues that clearly show the doctrine of the Church.
The multiple mention of Pope Francis by the exorcists wants to emphasize the untenability of the position of the Jesuit general, especially because Pope Francis himself is a Jesuit. Sosa Abascal had appeared in Rimini after all as an interpreter of papal thought and action.
"The Church, founded on the Scriptures and the Apostolic Tradition, officially teaches that the devil is a creature and a personal being and warns of those who, like Father Sosa, consider him merely a symbol."
For their comments, the exorcists published numerous pertinent biblical passages and a list of important documents and writings on the existence of the devil and about him.
The Exorcist Association was founded by the long-standing principal exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, P. Gabriele Amorth.
