New Institute of Female Religious Blooms in Vocations Desert

For the tradition-steeped Institut du Bon Pasteur (IBP), six candidates in the traditional rite will be consecrated to priests and deacons on June 29th.

(Paris) In Bordeaux, where the closing of the Archbishop's seminary has just been announced, this year's higher consecrations of the traditional Institut du Bon Pasteur will take place on the 29th of June. Recently, the Institute also started female branch.

Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, the Archbishop of Bordeaux, announced a few days ago that the Archdiocesan seminary, which has been serving as an inter-diocesan seminary for several years, will be closed at the end of the current academic year. The reason for the drastic measure is the persistent lack of appeal.

Not directly related to the closure, but symbolic, is that this year's rise in ordinations will be credited to the traditional Institut du Bon Pasteur (Institute of the Good Shepherd) in Bordeaux.

On June 29, Msgr. François Bacqué will consecrate six candidates of the Institute to priests or deacons.

Msgr. Bacqué, born in 1936 like Pope Francis, is titular archbishop of Gradisca and until his retirement in 2011, he was Apostolic Nuncio in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He himself comes from Bordeaux and was ordained a priest in 1966 for this archdiocese.

The consecrations take place in the church of Saint-Eloi beginning at 9 o'clock. It is the main church of the Institute. At the same time as the consecrations, the 40th priestly jubilee of the founder and Superior General Philippe Laguérie is celebrated.

P. Laguérie emerged from the Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX). The quarrel came when he began to represent sedevacant positions. He gave these up later, founded his own religious community and approached Rome again. In 2006, a year before the Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, the Institut du Bon Pasteur was legally recognized as the Institute of the Apostolic Life of the Pontifical Right and returned to full unity with Rome. Since then, it has been under the authority of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, which was recently incorporated by Pope Francis as a section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Last April 6, five candidates from the Institute were ordained as sub-deacons, while eleven candidates received the lower orders. Archbishop Emery Kabongo Kaumdowi, Archbishop Emeritus of Ludo and canon of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, consecrated the ordinations.

On March 19, 2019, the feast of St. Joseph, a new branch was canonically established by the Institute in Warsaw. In Poland there are six priests of the Institute in Bialystok, Czestochowa and Warsaw.

On March 25, the first three novices of the still very young female branch of the Institute made their solemn vows. The Servantes Réparatrices de la Sainte Famille were established in Bogota in Colombia and recognized by the Archbishop there. Their charism includes tradition and the traditional form of the Roman Rite. They support the priests of the Institute through their prayer. In a special way they devote themselves to the sanctification of the family, both in prayer and in the apostolate.

Cardinal Burke Ordains Four New Priests in France

(Paris) Cardinal Raymond Burke has ordained four new priests to the Institut du Bon Pasteur in Bordeaux on 23 June.

The Good Shepherd Institute has been part of the Old Rite Ecclesia Dei communities since 2006. The community was founded by Abbé Philippe Laguérie, who was ordained a priest in 1979 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and joined the Society of St. Pius X (FSSPX).

In 2004 he was expelled from the Society because of internal criticism. Then he founded with four other priests the Institut du Bon Pasteur, which returned to unity with Rome and was canonically established as a society of apostolic life. The purpose of the institute is above all "the formation of priests and the defense of the holy traditions of the Church in the liturgy and doctrine, against the modern errors.” For this reason, the Institute strives for a new evangelization in the sense of tradition.

In addition to the four new priests, two deacons were consecrated last week.

The mother house of the community is located in Bordeaux. The seat of the founder and Superior General, Abbé Laguérie, is Courtelain, where the institute's own seminary St. Vincent de Paul is located. There are currently about 40 seminarians preparing for the priesthood.

The Community currently has offices in France, Italy, Poland, Brazil and Colombia.

Priestly Ordinations in France 2016: A New Low Point

The ordinations in France take place mostly around June, near the Feast of St.. Peter and Paul (June 29)  who are regarded as two pillars of the Holy Church.
The Bishops' Conference of France (CEF) announced a few days ago that about a hundred new priests this year were consecrated for the Catholic Church: 79 diocesan for pastoral ministry - a little more than 2015 (68), but less than in 2014, where 82 diocesan ordinations already hit an absolute low for some centuries.
Particularly sad is the low ordination number of religious priests, whether connected to an order or a new community: one expects about twenty.
For comparison: in 2016 the Episcopal Conference expects about 100 ordinations; in 2015 there were around 120, in 2014 to around 140; 2002 was around 200.
The decline in vocations has seriously strained the age pyramid.
The number of priests in France has almost halved in the last twenty years: from 29,000 (diocesan and religious priests together) in 1995 to about 15,000 in the year 2015.
10,000 of them are older than 65 years, 7,000 are more than 75 years old.
It is estimated that every year about 800 French priests die.
This means that the number of priests will be halved again within less than 15 years. In the long term about 3,000-4,000 priests are expected in France.
The ordinations are distributed very irregularly over the diocese: the Archdiocese of Paris with 11 ordinations is, of course, in the lead; However, it is closely followed by the dioceses of Vannes (7) and Fréjus-Toulon (6), the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bordeaux (5) and four in Lucon en Vendée, Saint-Denis and Versailles. There are also five ordinations of the Communauté Saint-Martin in Évron (Mayenne). This priestly community was once in talks to take over the monastery abandoned by Benedictines, Abbey Weingarten (Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart). The project was of course very quickly discarded because of the expected "lack of acculturation".
The other dioceses in western France follow the sad country trend: two new priests in Quimper, one each in Bayeux, in Rennes, Nantes and in Laval.
In the diocese of Coutances, Séez, Saint-Brieux, Angers and Le Mans there are no ordinations this year.

Ordinations in traditional rite 2016: Institute of the Good Shepherd, Bordeaux

It is striking that there are those diocese best known as traditional friendly diocese, have the most vocations: Fréjus-Toulon, Vannes, Lucon and  the more conservative communities such as the Communauté de Saint-Martin in Évron (Mayenne).
In addition,  the communities of tradition are brought in, including the Fraternity of St. Peter , the Institute of the Good Shepherd (Institute of the Good Shepherd) and the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, whose new priests are to be ordained in the traditional form of the Roman Rite.
"The seminarians reflect the sociology of practicing Catholics."
This dynamic development as pleasing also, at the moment is rather limited; and it will not be enough to reverse the negative trend.
This slight optimistic situation seems not to be of interest to Church leadership anyway. In particular, there is no re-evaluation of recent modernist practice up for debate.
Some Catholic journalists are of a mind that only a complete zero would be reached before it can lead to profound reforms.
As the Belgian example shows that is very doubtful:
The number of priestly ordinations had fallen to zero in the four northern Belgian dioceses (except Bruges) years ago without  bringing any reaction from Cardinal Danneels.
At the same time, Danneels issued a decree by which the Flemish seminarians who were studying in neighboring countries (diocese 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands), - in spite of the shortage of priests returning to northern Belgium, was banned. The Dutch were incidentally very grateful for these Flemish priest exiles.
Danneels' successor, Archbishop DeKesel, is acting in the same spirit.
Although there is a shortage of priests in Belgium and particularly in Brussels, with the pending closure of churches in the coming autumn, Dekesel has expelled the Priestly Fraternity of the Holy Apostle established by his predecessor, Archbishop Msgr. Léonard, in Brussels  (with currently seven priests and 21 seminarians) on 30 June 2016 from the Archdiocese, ​​on the grounds that the majority are French.
They don't just want bankruptcy, they  want naked, yes a stark naked collapse.

Clerical Association of Saint Gregory the Great -- New Community of Tradition: Society of Good Shepherd Splintering

(Rome) within the traditional Institut du Bon Pasteur (Institute of the Good Shepherd), there have been times of disquiet. The calm was restored by Rome's intervention in the sense at the price that some priests and seminarians of the Institute have now established with the Clerical Association of Saint Gregory the Great, a new community. A canonical recognition is not yet available.

The Institute was canonically erected by the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei in 2006. The founder and Superior General, Philippe Laguérie and the first members of the young Institute came from the Society of St. Pius X. A Visitation of the Institute in the spring of 2012 by the then and now renewed Secretary of the Commission Ecclesia Dei, today's Curial Archbishop Mario Pozzo, led to internal conflict in the institute. Among other things,  Rome had called for a more positive view in the formation of priests  with respect to  the Second Vatican Council  in the setting of Disputationes Theologicae and a change in the statutes in which the designation of the traditional Rite as "exclusive Rite" of the Institute, "the Institute's own rite" should be changed (see separate report Institut du Bon Pasteur has new Superior General - If it Comes to the Dividing of the Institute? ). 

Conflict was Sparked by the Interference of Rome

An internal conflict flared up about the identity of the institution. A majority of younger members of the institute struggled at the general chapter  in that year against Roman interference and selected on 5 July a new General Council headed by Abbé Roch Perrel. The deselected founder and former Superior General Laguérie fought with the support of Rome in the election. He warned against internal   battles and a rebellion against Rome. The election was declared invalid and Laguérie was reinstated as Superior General. Under the supervision of Ecclesia Dei  a new General Chapter took place on 12 September 2013 which held that again the Superior General  Abbé Laguérie was elected for a six year period. But what has happened since with the group of priests and seminarians who made 2012 resistance? The majority acquiesced to the decisions of Rome.

Four appeals to Rome - two "answers"

However, four priests of the Institute went to the Apostolic Signatura in Rome with four requests  on various issues. Meanwhile, there are answers to two appeals before.

The first appeal concerned the right to inspect certain documents to the common questions.  The decision of the Church court was negative (Protocol No. 48339/13 CA Pictavien, electionis, Rev.dus St. Carusi - Pontificia Commissio Ecclesia Dei, 17 September 2013). The second appeal was directed against the repeat of the election of the General Council and the interventions to make in the electoral body, "that would have led to a contradiction even in Burkina Faso," as the Clerical Association of Saint Gregory the Great, noted in a written statement. It was initially partially approved. 

Appeals Archived Because of "Lack of Money" and "Time Limit Exceeded"

On 11 December, 2013 however,  the  appellants were informed in a letter dated 30 November that the appeal had been archived.  By reason of  exceeding the deadline and financial aspects. The applicant had lack of income, because for months he no longer  received grants from his Institute, then he requested the allocation of a public defender, which was refused. The rejection was not transmitted until 30 days after the deadline and at the same time succinctly explains that it had been archived due to exceeding the deadline of appeals. The procedure is reminiscent of an elegant little tricking. That it was moored to a question of money,  makes recent acclamations of  the recently emphasized "Church of the poor" more bitter than funny.

Other signals are interpreted by the priests and seminarians that resisted the intervention of Rome not very positively. By circular dated 11 November 2013 it was communicated to the priests of the Institute, that Jean-Pierre Cardinal Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux  would be the canonical reference point for the Institute. In the Diocese there is the general headquarters and other facilities of the Institute. From the circular it is not entirely clear whether Cardinal Ricard is in a sense a kind of "permanent Visitor" or "Commissar" of the Institute. The Masonic magazine Franc-Maçonnerie magazines from the September October 2013 reported that the cardinal urged priests of his archdiocese   to continue to go to the lodge meetings, because in allusion to Pope Francis, the Freemasonry was in the "existential periphery". Clerical Association of Saint Gregory the Great - Five  Priorities

The appellants  wanted to exhaust all ways, and also by the answers as they write, to be able to recognize a "Wink of Providence." "After everyone has checked to see, we came to the conclusion that it was time to leave." The group decided to stay together and to form their own community in order to preserve the identity of the Institut de Bon Pasteur in another form.

They founded the Clerical Association of Saint Gregory the Great, in order to make their "contribution to the Catholic tradition." The new altrituelle Community lists five priorities of their work:

1) The formation of seminarians in fidelity to the Church's tradition.
2) The website Disputationes Theologicae, which is published in French and Italian, as an organ of a "constructive criticism". [Guess what's going up on the blogroll?]
3) Communal prayer life, "especially for the triumph of faith for the Church and for souls, who are exposed to great trial and particularly the persistent need of prayer."
4) The maintenance of the traditional Mass "on a large reliance on the fruits of the Holy Victim of the Altar."
5) The use of the confessional, a service that  the priests of the Clerics Association of Saint Gregory the Great offer to dioceses.

Those who signed the explanation were  two priests Abbé Louis-Numa Julien (France) and Don Stefano Carusi (Italy) and the Polish seminarians Łukasz Zaruski and Bartholomew K. Krzych.

Father Philippe Laguerie is Again the General Superior of the Institute of the Good Shepherd

(Paris) The General Chapter of the traditional Institut du Bon Pasteur (Institute of the Good Shepherd) was elected on the 12th of September, the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary in Fontgombault Abbé Philippe Laguerie back to the Superior General. Assistant to the Superior General, Father Abbot Vella Yannick, pastor of Saint Eloi and Father Paul Aulagnier, rector of the St. Vincent de Paul Seminary of the Institute were elected. This ends a dispute over the general management of the Institute, which had broken open at the General Chapter of 2012.

The Institute, a society of apostolic life of pontifical right, was recognized ad experimentum by Rome in September 2006,and thus returned to full communion with Rome. Father Laguerie had in common with others of the Society of St. Pius X, separated and founded his own institute.

In the wake of an Apostolic Visitation, which took place under the leadership of then and now renewed Secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, Monsignor Guido Pozzo, there was some internal unrest in the institute. The visitor had asked the Institute to affirm the Second Vatican Council in its formation of priests and to use the Catechism of the Catholic Church in its revised edition from 1997 as the authoritative basis of the Church's teaching. In addition, there can be given no categorical refusal of the celebration of the Novus Ordo. Reasons for criticism were also found in some critical articles about post-Conciliar developments that had been written by priests of the Institute.

The Roman measures have strengthened the critics an agreement with the Holy See within the SSPX, which appeared to be within reach in Spring of 2012.

At the General Chapter in May 2012, Father Laguerie was not confirmed as Superior General, but a younger Director was elected under the new Superior General Perell Roch, who took a more critical position against the Roman principles. However, the electoral process was controversial because of a re-election, and was challenged by Father Laguerie. In July 2012 the new CDF appointed by Pope Benedict XVI., Curial Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, became President of Ecclesia Dei confirmed the opposition to the former Superior General. In April 2013, the Vice-President appointed by Ecclesia Dei, Curial Archbishop Augustine Di Noia convened as acting superior general of the Institute with the Abbot Emeritus of Fontgombault, a new contract with the General Chapter and to repeat the election of the General Government. The term of office of the newly elected General Council will last until 2019.

Institute of the Good Shepherd: Ecclesia Dei Imposes Commissar Administrator for New Election

(Bordeaux / Rome) Nine months after the elections for the appointment of a new Superior General and a new General Council of the traditional Instituts du Bon Pasteur and the subsequent internal conflict is now before the decision of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei. The Commission, which is under the Institute since 2006, has appointed a provisional administrator, who has a mandate of six months. Its mission is to prepare new elections for the governing bodies at this time and carried out under his supervision. The Institute of the Good Shepherd was made up of former members of the Society of St. Pius X. and established that because they no longer wanted to endorse their canonically irregular status.

The Institute, based in Bordeaux, is in contrast to the SSPX, recognized as a society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right of the Church in 2006 and placed under the Ecclesia Dei Commission.

In spring 2012 a visitation of the Institute by the Ecclesia Dei Commission came to the election of the Institute. The visitation by the then-Secretary of Ecclesia Dei, Monsignor Guido Pozzo, had caused quite a stir and considerable unrest in tradition-bound circles. It had been put out as an example within the SSPX, as a reason why the Brotherhood should not agree to any agreement with the Holy See. Rome had demanded and required of the Institute an appropriate consideration of the Second Vatican Council in priestly formation, to reconsider the categorical exclusion of the celebration of the New Rite and to recognize the Catechism of the Catholic Church in its 1997 edition as the authoritative compendium of Catholic doctrine.

At the General Chapter on 5 July, a new Institute's director was chosen for younger members, who were critical of the Roman terms. The New Superior General, Father Roch Perrel, however, was a choice that was disputed by the founders and former Superior General, Father Laguérie, due to procedural deficiencies in Rome. In one of his first acts as prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller appealed which took place on the 30th of July 2012 and ordered the repeat of the elections.

This recent decision of Rome dealt at first sight with neither of the two warring sides fairly. They also denied the claim of Abbé Philippe Laguèrie to continue to be the rightful superior general. Elections under Roman supervision will provide clarity and bring peace back to the Institute. Long periods of time are considered problematic, in which ambiguity and uncertainty prevail: first nine months until the decision of Rome and now another six months to the elections. The majority of the Institute, it was possible, despite the adverse circumstances, to be faithful to the the founding charism with the necessary peace and serenity. This solid foundation made possible the growth in the Institute by new entrants and seminarians in the last few months.

Summorum Pontificum: A Source of Priests and Religious Vocations -- Interview With Abbé Claude Barthe

(Rome)  From the 1st to the 3rd of November the first great international pilgrimage of Tradition since the promulgation of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum to Rome will take place.   The pastoral assistant of the pilgrimage is the French priest, Abbé Claude Barthe.  During the International Pilgrimage the Immemorial Mass of All Ages will be celebrated by three high dignitaries of the Roman Curia,  Antonio Cardinal Canizares Llovera, Walter Cardinal Brandmueller and Curial Bishop Giuseppe Sciacca, the General Secretary of the Governorate of Vatican City.  The Pontifical High Mass at the conclusion of the Pilgrimage in the St. Peter's Basilica will be celebrated by Cardinal Canizares.

Abbé Barthe who is one of the driving forces for the execution of the Una cum Papa Nostro Pilgrimage and gave Alberto Carosa of Vatican Insider the following interview.

Abbé, there are requests of your person from several sides. Would give us a brief resume of your education and vocational path?

I was born in Fleurance in 1947 in south western France.  My priestly vocation went back to my Catholic childhood. I studied at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse as a Diocesan seminarian.  The post-Concliar Revolution forced me therefore to leave the seminary.  I then received a degree in History and Jurisprudence.  I felt so bound tot he traditional liturgy, that I entered into the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X in Econe.  In 1970 I was ordained a priest by Archbishop Lefebvre.  I belonged then to the "hard" wing of the Traditionalists, but I became increasingly Roman and finally a diocesan priest.   Today I am an instructor in the subject of Liturgy in a seminary of Tradition.  One could also say that I am a "published  priest" because of my numerous, perhaps too numerous books and articles.

How did this idea of a pilgrimage of Tradition take place and how were you selected as the pastoral assistant?

The idea of a pilgrimage and for a Traditional Mass in St. Peter's Basilica for the "People of Summorum Pontificum", as well as the diocesean and also the communities, along with the SSPX, has been in existence for about a year in the so-called Roman circles of the "Reform of the Reform",  who really see in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite,  a supporting pillar for true Liturgical renewal.  Because of the very diverse roles of a Pastoral Assistant they probably thought of me, because I was seen as a party follower who sees "unity in all living powers", a kind manner of border runner between all directions of Tradition.

On the 10th of September you held a press conference, which announced the Pilgrimage.  Could you tie together some of the central aspects?

In the first line I wanted to establish that it would be a pilgrimage of thanksgiving.  The pilgrims will offer above all a thanksgiving Mass in the extraordinary form and and as support for the Holy Father on the 5th Anniversary of the promulgation of the Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, which is generally known to have come into power on September 14th, 2007.  For many diocesan -- and religious priests who offer their daily sacrifice of the Mass in the extraordinary form, it acted like a spiritual victory, even for the faithful who -- still sadly too few -- parishes, who could feel joy at this Liturgy and its mysticism.   One can say that in this decision by Benedict XVI.  an entire Summorum Pontificum-people was created.  This people will thank him for this.

And how about the other aspects?

I must say that it also will act as a recognition of loyalty to Peter.  The second reason is to announce our love for the Church and our loyalty to Peter, just as and especially in this current time of a bitter and difficult situation.  We are full conscious that the efforts, which the Pope has confronted has been difficult.  The Traditional Roman Mass, especially the High Mass, will always be a wonderful sign of faith of the Church as Mater et Magistra:  it is this Liturgical recognition which we bring to expression at the tomb of the Apostle, for the successor of Peter.  It will be a gift and a plea.  We will especially offer a gift to God, to ask him for graces for the reigning Pope, in order for him to continue his wonderful work, which he has completed since the beginning of his pontificate, especially today in the midst of cross and trial.

The pilgrimage is taking place along with the opening of the Year of Faith, is there a relationship between the two events?

Naturally.  Our pilgrimage will also express our participation in the mission of the Church.  Would would like to introduce the contribution of the always youthful traditional Liturgy for the New Evangelization, which the Holy Father is asking for during the Year of Faith.  It is clear that this is an initiative with the support of a large number of families, and that it is a source of increasingly larger numbers of religious and priestly vocations, something, which has shown itself as proven to extremely valuable in the Western world at present.

It appears that has not sufficiently considered this completely other vocations "crisis", which the institutes of Tradition are experiencing, in which they are forced to refuse those waiting for priestly office because of a shortage of places and facilities, a crisis which is the exact opposite of the Diocesan.

I would even say that one must especially stress this point.  By the grace of God, the Traditional Liturgy promoted without filling all the holes,  there has been a significant growth in vocations in certain countries like France and the USA -- still, the phenomenon could widen itself.  In France for example there are 710 diocesan seminarians against 140 seminarians (50 from the SSPX) in seminaries of Tradition,  this corresponds to 16%.  This relationship also effects those who are ordained to the priesthood.  This year there were 21 new priests of tradition against 97 diocesan priests.  Additionally there has been a complete transformation and realignment of the diocesan clergy.   The young dicoesan priests and the seminarians of the diocese are drawn to both forms of the Roman Rite and say this quite openly.   It is not to underestimate if the same goes for Ffrance, that a third of the diocesan priestly candidates could be described as candidates for Summorum Pontificum.  "Le petit people", as one says in the French, the simple faithful, stand by the Holy Father to follow the mission of the Church.

How do you explain the criticism and irritation about the pilgrimage, which has come from certain circles?

I can tell you that I have recommended that the organization committee is formed around Una Voce, because it works for unification, which is held int he world of Tradition as "neutral" and therefore liable to have the least criticism.  The conflicts and directions within the groups of Tradition considered, it seemed a good idea, to support them first by a hastily established committee,  in order to avoid jealousies and rivalries.  Some critics appeared from the worry in the success from it that a new organization could be created, which would encompass the entire world of Tradition.  If that had been our intention, we would surely have already succeeded to make the earth square.  I think that around the earth in the meantime have the understanding that we have solely organized a modest organizational committee for this event, which will direct the pilgrimage and dissolve on the evening of the 3rd of November.

What message do you want to finish this interview with?

I don't want to finish with theological words, but with those which the faithful can understand that the Holy Mass on the 3rd of November is a giant "parish Mass" of Catholics from the whole world, who come in order to be together with the"Universal Pastor", to pray with the Pope.  They want want to be together for him and to pray with him in the Gregorian Latin Liturgy, which out of their very own understanding is a community Liturgy.

Abbé Claude Barthe was born in 1947 in the Archdiocese of Toulouse, studied at the Institut Catholique de Toulouse from 1964, where he acquired a degree degree in history and in civil law. In the post-Conciliar upheaval he adopted traditionalist positions and entered the seminary of the Society of St. Pius X . in Econe Switzerland. In 1979, he was received by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, founder of the SSPX priest. Because of sedevacantist positions he was expelled from the SSPX in 1987. He was among the founders of the magazine Catholica, which he edited for several years and is one of the sharpest critics of the Church crisis, the brilliant theologian and liturgist the took a teaching position at the seminary of the Institute Bon Pasteur. After years of a canonically unclear status, Barthe approached together with the founders of the Institute Bon Pasteur increasingly to Rome and finally returned back to full unity with the Holy See. In 2005 the canonical status was finally resolved by a decision of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, and he was issued a Celebret. He now teaches Liturgy at the seminary of the Institute of Christ the King and High Priest. Abbé Barthe has written many books that are not available in English.

Leadership Change at the Institute of the Good Shepherd: Not Vatican II Enough

( The traditional Institute of the Good Shepherd which is situated in Bordeaux has a new General Superior.

 The Institute was founded in September 2006. The six founding members were all former clergy of the SSPX.

A New General Superior

Till now the General Superior has been Father Phillipe Laguérie.  His successor is Father Roch Perrel.

The first assistant was Fr. Paul Aulangier, second assistant Fr. Leszek Krolikowski, third assistant Fr. Stefano Carusi and forth assistant Fr. Louis-Numa Julien.

The new General Superior was recently the Rector of the Institute's Seminary St. Vincent de Paul and previously the Superior of the Institute in Brazil.

Something isn't right

The site 'katholisches.infoo' reports that on the internet site of the Institute was a notification which states that the only messages that are validity are those published by the official internet site.

It was published on the 6th of July.

The notification was signed by-- not identified by name -- the Secretary of the new General Superior.

There is not a word on the General Chapter and the new election.

This is what Rome exxpected

This clearly demonstrates, according to '', a crisis of leadership within the Institute.

A younger generations has taken leadership.  Actually, a part of the Institutes appears not to recognize the changes:

"An invocation from Rome against the validity of the General Chapter can't be excluded."

Unclear Situation

The site referred to the blog of the past General Superior.

In an entry on the 6th of July he wrote knowingly in connection with the election:

"All ways lead to Rome, even especially  the most tenuous...

For that reason,  very soon!"

It is unclear, if the results of the election is connected with the most recent Vatican Visitation.

This expected from the Institute a better connection of the Pastoral Council and the new doctrinal office in priestly formation as well as the recognition of the 'Catechism of the Catholic Church.' [Would that be the same one published by Weltbild and edited by the Viennese Cardinal?]

France on the 25th of June: Curial Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos ordained one priest and four Deacons for the Institute of the Good Shepherd in the 240,000 population city of Bordeaux. A user on the Traditionalist website '' published a photograph with Cardinal Castrillon in the Sacristy of the Institute and a large portrait of the Founder of the Society of St. Pius X, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre (1991) hanging in the back ground.

Pope May Offer the Society a Personal Ordinariate

The Holy see is ascertaining the possibility of the unifying of the Society of St. Pius X by erecting a Personal Ordinariat.

As far as concerns the question of a form in church law for the Society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre,  the Vatican appears to be considering the erection of a Personal Ordinariat.  since Autumn 2010 Canon lawyers have been studying this idea.  One such canonical solution for the Society put in a quasischismatic situation by the 1988 Episcopal consecrations will be proposed by the summer.  This was reported on the French site Summorum Pontificum observatus.

In the French rea of Catholic traditionalism it is presently an exchange of blows taking place.  The page Disputationes Theologicae, which is made up of members affiliated with  the Institute of the Good Shepherd is driven to view the talks between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X as "abortive".  Similarly, American Vaticanist John Allen understands from explanations from Abbé de Caquera and Bishop Williamson, one of the four Bishops of the Society.

Summorum Pontificum observatus sees behind the voices, which have attempted to put the discussions in a negative light, "an active minority of French priests of the Pius Society" at work, "who dismiss canonical reognition".  These critics are internal to the society to which belong the French District Superior, Bishops Tissier de Mallerais as well, who have described Pope Benedict XVI earlier this year as "supermodernistic", according to Messsa in latino.

Summorum Pontificum observatus reports also the voices which speak of a failure of the talks between Rome and the Society being "unfounded".   The emerging  offer of the Holy See, to erect for the Society a Personal Ordinaria as a canonical structure within the Church, is a "treat opportunity".  They would secure the independence of the Society from the Diocesan Bishops.  It is a particular concern of the Pope to offer the Society a solution which is canonically reliable.

France's Institute of the Good Shepherd is coming to the USA

The Catholic Caveman says that the Institute of the Good Shepherd is thinking about sending priests to the United States.
