A Pact Between Pope Francis and the Society of Saint Pius X for the Isolation of Tradition?

Is Pope Francis preparing to eliminate the Ecclesia Dei communities with the help of the Society of Saint Pius X.

(Rome) More and more voices are dealing with the rumors that the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei is about to be dissolved.

The two authors Fabrizio Cannone and Alessandro Rico see it as a papal maneuver to assassinate tradition from behind. Fabrizio Cannone, born in 1974, holds a Doctorate in Church History and Religious Studies, and has written for Corrispondenza Romana, Fides Catholica, Homme Nouveau and numerous other Catholic media. Most recently, he published the book: "The Inconvenient Pope. History and background of the beatification of Pius IX." (1)

Alessandro Rico, born in 1991, studied philosophy at the Sapienza and Political History of Ideas at the LUISS in Rome. In 2017 he published together with Lorenzo Castellani the book "The end of politics? Technocracy, Populism, Multiculturalism". (2) He calls himself a "Catholic, Conservative and Opponent of Political Correctness". Both are close to the Catholic tradition.

SSPX Spokesman Confirms: "No Date for Reconciliation"

(Paris) Father Alain Lorans, spokesman for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X. in France, according to AFP press agency, said: "Dialogue continues without timetable." There is no specific date.  The FSSPX spokesman thus confirms what Guido Pozzo, the secretary of the Pontifical Commission, Ecclesia Dei, and the Vatican representativr for talks with the Society, said yesterday in an interview with Rome Reports.

Both sides thus indirectly denied speculation that the erection of the Society as a personal prelature could be announced by Pope Francis tomorrow, May 13, the 100th anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary in Fatima.

Archbishop Pozzo said yesterday that Monsignor Fellay would first have to sign the doctrinal preamble before the canonical recognition could be passed as a personal prelature.

In the end, seven of the Society's French district and three heads of aligned religious communities had very clearly spoken out against an agreement with Rome at the present time. AFP therefore headlined yesterday: "The Lefebvrian integralists between the road to Rome and an internal crisis."

"Shock Statement" by Bishop Fellay? -- Rome: Talks With SSPX Will Continue After the Summer

Internet site of the Belgian Bishops' Conference Reported a
"Shock Statement" by Bishop Fellay, but in Rome the situation is
being downplayed

(Rome / Menzingen) The publication yesterday of a press release by the Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X led the media to various speculations.  It's the case especially for official media: the more dismissive the attitudes towards the SSPX the more hysterical the reporting. In the Vatican, however, one who is directly involved has downplayed this and strove for reassurance.
From the Church media, who are less than friendly to the SSPX, criticism of Pope Francis was placed in the foreground, for example, by the [very aberrosexual] German section of Vatican Radio. The Internet platform Cathobel of the Belgian Bishops' Conference, which is comparable to Katholisch.de of the German Bishops Conference, even reported a "shock statement" by the Superior General.
This was made with respect to  the following sentence:
"In the great and painful confusion that prevails currently in the Church, the proclamation of Catholic doctrine requires the opposition to errors which - fatally favored by a large number of shepherds, and even the Pope himself -  have penetrated even into her heart"
Other media stressed the statement that the acquisition of a canonical recognition was "not" the primary objective. Thus, the media's tenor is that the SSPX had  "slammed the door  in the face" of Rome and "slammed the door to Rome."
However, the Superior General of the SSPX had also said that this, as a "Catholic work", is a "right" of [official] recognition.

Archbishop Pozzo: my critique is probably the "quite controversial" Post-Synodal Letter Amoris laetitia

A very different reaction took place in Rome with Curial Archbishop Guido Pozzo.  As secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, it is he who is among those who are directly involved in the talks between the Holy See and the Society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.

Curial Archbishop Guido Pozzo

Msgr. Pozzo sees the declaration as no cause for alarm. The allegations of the SSPX are largely "already known". The Curial Archbishop also expressed his [own] conviction that is sharply critical of Pope Francis referring to  the Post-Synodal Letter Amoris laetitia, particularly on the issue of remarried divorcees that indeed is "quite controversial."
With regard to canonical recognition, so Pozzo, to  the French-speaking news agency I.Media, Bishop Fellay has only brought a "wait and see" attitude.
The declaration is therefore not to be considered as "negative act", which  the French daily La Croix also printed, citing Msgr.Pozzo. However, you'll realize that an imminent solution to the problems is not to be expected.
According I.Media and the Internet platform cath.ch of the Swiss Bishops' Conference,  talks between Rome and the SSPX will continue after the summer.

What Rome Expects of the Society of Pius X -- Interview of Archbishop Guido Pozzo

Archbishop Guido Pozzo (Ecclesia Dei) on the "Preconditions" for the
canonical recognition of the Society with Rome
(Rome) What Rome expects from the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) said Curial Archbishop Guido Pozzo, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei . The interview was held by Luca Marcolivio for the press Zenit .
About two weeks ago Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX was received by Pope Francis at the Vatican. The private audience caused quite a stir since it is known that Francis has no strong sympathies for  tradition.

New "Doctrinal Preamble"?

Curial Archbishop Pozzo described the meeting as "useful" on the "path" of the SSPX,  "towards a full reconciliation" that "will be made a canonical recognition of the institute."  Currently it is "primarily" about creating a more trusting and respectful air, "to overcome  hardening and distrust".
When asked which "basic requirements" Rome is urging of the SSPX for recognition, Pozzo said that the SSPX would submit a "doctrinal statement" which "at the appropriate moment," is one that will contain all the "essential and necessary points". Pozzo described such points as: "the approval of the creed, the sacramental bond and hierarchical communion with the Roman Pontiff, the head of the episcopal college united with him."
Specifically the Curial Archbishop explained, "that the SSPX is asked to recognize that only the Magisterium of the Church is entrusted with the preservation, defense and interpretation of the deposit of faith, and the Magisterium is not higher than the Word of God, but this serves only to hand down doctrine." The supreme Magisterium is the "authentic interpreter" even of  the previous texts of the Magisterium  "in the light of the everlasting tradition," including those of the Second Vatican Council. So there is no place for "opposing novelties", but only for a deeper understanding of the Depositum fidei, "always in the same doctrine, the same sense and in the same tradition."

Discussions have "led to a significant clarification" of Vatican II

As for the Second Vatican Council, the trodden path of the "recent years" have "led to a significant clarification," said Pozzo. "The 2nd Vatican Council can only be understood in the context of the entire tradition of the Church and her constant magisterium in an appropriate manner."  In addition, a different weighting and thus binding of each document is observed. The person in charge of Ecclesia Dei emphasized that there even after "the canonical recognition" the conciliar documents can continue to be discussed. The aim of the "discussion, deepening" must be to "avoid any misunderstandings and contradictions" that "to our knowledge are currently spread throughout the Church".

Outstanding issues such as religious freedom, ecumenism are not "an obstacle to recognition"

The open questions about the relationship between church and state, freedom of religion, practice of ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue as well as "some aspects of liturgical reform and their actual use" would "be discussed and remain points to be clarified." but however, "they are not an obstacle for the canonical and legal recognition" of the SSPX.

Msgr. Pozzo Interview: "Where Are We With the SSPX?"

Read what Archbishop Pozzo had to say about the SSPX in Zenit on February 26, 2016.
We here present some extracts of Archbishop Pozzo's interview, given to Luca Marcolivio and published today in the Italian online version of Zenit. Archbishop Pozzo has been working on the reconciliation of the SSPX in the Pontifical Comission Ecclesia Dei for some years, especially after having been appointed Secretary, for a second time, in 2013.
It is not always easy to know exactly what Archbishop Pozzo really means to convey to the press when he speaks about the SSPX.
These comments are to be taken in light of the following elements given by Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta in his January conference published today.
On July 2015, Rome made another offer to the SSPX.
The SSPX Superior General’s intention before answering this proposal from the Congregation of the Faith was
to write an exhaustive explanation to make it very clear how we are and how we act, what we preach, what we do, what we do not do, and what we are not ready to do, in order to find out if the Society really is accepted 'as it is'."

Vatican Does Not Expect a Capitulation from the SSPX

Commission "Ecclesia Dei" -Secretary Pozzo: There is "no doubt" that the teachings of Vatican II have a different binding, depending on the nature of the document. SSPX could expect to return with personal prelature

Vatican (kath.net/RV/red) Guido Pozzo, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission 'Ecclesia Dei' has said in an interview with the French magazine 'Famille Chrétienne' that the Vatican will require no capitulation from the controversial SSPX Pius X. This was reported by "Vatican Radio". "The Holy See invites the SSPX to take its side into the framework of doctrinal issues, insofar as they are essential for a permanent attachment to the faith and to Catholic teaching and tradition," said Pozzo. Currently, there are obviously continuing talks with the SSPX. The Secretary of the Pontifical Commission then stressed: "The reservations of the SSPX over some aspects and formulations of the Second Vatican Council and to some of the reforms carried out that do not concern non-negotiable dogmatic and doctrinal issues may be simultaneously further studied and developed."

With that Pozzo signaled that the SSPX could retain some peculiarities when they have been inserted back into the large frame of the Catholic Church. There is "no doubt" that the teachings of Vatican II have different bindingness, depending on the nature of the document. "The Constitutions of the Church on Revelation, Lumen Gentium and Dei Verbum, have the character of doctrinal pronouncements; the explanations of religious freedom and non-Christian religions as well as the ecumenical decree, on the other hand, have less authority and less bindingness."

The CDF has presented the SSPX in 2011, with a "Doctrinal Statement."; this they should sign if they want a full return to the Catholic Church. Pozzo let them know in case of a reconciliation with Rome the SSPX could expect the status of a personal prelature. He also confirmed that the Vatican - as during the pontificate of Benedict XVI. - insists on unchanged clarity on the part of the SSPX. The conversation between the Prefect of the CDF, Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Bishop Bernard Fellay went well according to Pozzo.

Scandal: Cardinal Burke and Archbishop Pozzo Leave Hall During Sandro Magister Lecture

(Rome) to a scandal occurred in Rome during the presentation of the conference proceedings on the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum on the 10th of October at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) during proceedings of the presentation of collected papers of the Third Conference on Summorum Pontificum, which had taken place in 2011. Raymond Cardinal Burke, Professor Giovanni Turco and the Vaticanist Sandro Magister three speakers were present.

Cardinal Burke recalled in his address to the "real reasons" why Pope Benedict XVI. in 2007, issued the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum: "to guarantee the right of all believers for this Rite, and for mutual enrichment between the new and the old." We could understand the comments as a criticism of Pope Francis, in his Civilta Cattolica interview of the motives of Benedict XVI. downplaying the granting of Summorum Pontificum and trying to reinterpret it.

The Cardinal also recalled Benedict's suffering, which he expressed in his letter to all the bishops, with the declared purpose and meaning of the Motu Proprio. A condition that was related to the liturgy and with the changes. An affliction that I witnessed and felt even in small and large seminar on the cardinal.

Cardinal Burke Recalled the "Real Reasons" for Summorum Pontificum

Giovanni Turco, Professor of Political Philosophy talked about the importance of Summorum Pontificum as the right of every believer "to have the non-suppression of the traditional rite." He also spoke about the over hasty and sloppy abolition of Latin and its translation into the national languages, pointing to translation errors corresponding in real doctrinal error.

Magister Effected Polite but Harsh Criticism of Decisions in the Liturgy by Pope Francis

Finally, Sandro Magister gave his contribution as a lecture on which Katholisches.info already reported (see separate report Pope Francis and the Liturgy - "Pure Functional Access" Reservations to Tradition, weakness in the knees before the Lord ). Master analyzed in a critical manner, the previous decisions of Pope Francis in the Liturgy: The ban for celebration in the old rite by the Franciscans of the Immaculate, the dismissal of all five consultants for the Office of Papal Liturgical Celebrations, who were close to the liturgical understanding of Benedict XVI., the refusal to genuflect in the Holy Mass at the words of consecration, although from papal Mass to papal Mass always newly master of ceremonies Guido Marini always included the two relevant points and finally the halting by CDF, that they no longer check the bizarre special forms in the Mass of the Neocatechumenal Way, as Benedict XVI. had ordered. Magister has also expressed the opinion that the Pope is "friendly" to everyone, "except with the traditionalists."

"Scandal Currently The Dominant Characteristic of Climate in Rome"

The lecture finally came to a scandal. Magister so openly expressed his criticism of Pope Francis, that Cardinal Burke and Archbishop Pozzo had to leave the room. "The response of Cardinal Burke and Archbishop Pozzo is indicative of the currently prevailing climate in Rome," the website Chiesa e Postconcilio (Church and Post-Conciliar). "Was it because of the time for both of them or was it simply a precaution, because of the polite but harsh criticism by Magister of Pope Francis? The withdrawal of a Cardinal during a major event is something glaring. All interpretations are allowed, "said the Spanish Catholic blogger Francisco de la Cigoña.

Archbishop Guido Pozzo Returns to Ecclesia Dei

(Vatican) Curial Bishop Guido Pozzo returns to the Papal Commission Ecclesia Dei. Pope Francis has named him today as Secretary of the Commission. This office was the Italian Prelate's from 2009 to 2012. The Commission was established in 1988 for that part of Which was recognized in the Church. The Commission is responsible for all Communities, groups and orders of Traditionalist Catholics in the Church.

In the Summer 2012 Pope Benedict XVI. changed a number of positions, after the talks between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X were disrupted. The reassignments stood also in connection with the appointment of the former Bishop of Regensburg, Gerhard Ludwig Müller as new Prefect of the Congregation of Doctrine and the Faith. The Prefect is at the same time the president of the Commission Ecclesia Dei. In stead of Msgr. Guido Pozzo, Pope Benedict XVI. named the American Dominican, Curial Bishop Augustine di Noia to Vice President of the Commission. The position of Secretary remained unoccupied. Msgr. Pozzo was promoted and assigned to the office of Papal Almoner.

What the return if Pozzo to Ecclesia Dei really means and if Curial Bishop di Noia will remain are only some of the questions connected to this.

Msgr. Guido Pozzo Promoted to Archbishop as Pope's Almoner

Vatican Logic:  Because he hasn't arrived to his most recent post, he will be promoted to Archbishop.

(kreuz.net, Vatican)  Today at noon, Pope Benedict XVI. named the present Secretary of the Papal Commission Ecclesia Dei, Prelate Guido Pozzo (60), to his Almoner and promoted him to Archbishop.

This was reported by the Vatican press service.

Unimportant Function

Msgr. Pozzo will be the successor of the Spanish Bishop de Blanco Prieto (75).

He was the "Almoner to His Holiness" for five years.

This unimportant office is directly under the Pope.  It is an abuse of the Sacrament of Holy Orders to ordain someone a Bishop for it.

Active in the Souvenir Business

The Papal Almoner cares for the Pope's charitable giving and distributes financial assistance.

He is a member of the Papal Household.  Its occupant has am inactive place in the Papal Liturgies of the Pope.

The position also draws income from the marketing of papal blessings on decorative paper. These can be purchased in the souvenir stores around the Vatican.

In the last years, Archbishop Pozzo has been a Vatican discussion partner for the negotiations with the Society of St. Pius X.
