First Communion "Star Wars" Mass with Light Saber Blessing

Hohenbrunn (Catholic news). There is a tremendous departure presently in southern Germany, which had its source in association with four parishes (St. Stephen in Putzbrunn, Ortisei in Sunnyvale, St. Magdalena in Ottobrun and St. Stephen in Hohenbrunn), from the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. It wasn't Darth Vader who gave the blessing to the first communion children. This was personally undertaken by Pastor Christoph Nobs with a bright green laser sword at the celebration of a Star Wars First Communion Mass. The idea for the stars-War Communion came from Nicolas Gkotses community director. Star Wars had been a theme for the children in their religious instruction and so he tried to communicate the gospel in this way in a timely manner. - "May the force be with you!"

"May the farce be with you." Indeed it is.

What about a Star Trek First Communion? How would they do that?

Instead of "Ite missa est." Pastor Spok up there in the photo would put his hand up palm out separating the four fingers into a V, thumb against the index and give the Vulcan blessing "Go and prosper."

They are like the government and other idiots. They all have to make self-love videos.

I have two young nephews living in Germany - and these are exactly the kind of silly stunts that have pushed them away from the Church. I thought we had gotten past this kind of nonsense decades ago.

I couldn't agree more - a cheap farce!

Exactly!

Germany and the European Church and society in general is stuck in the 1970's. Soon they will all be praying to Allah and we won't have to worry about it.

The Star Wars stories are based on a pantheistic and dualistic philosophy totally at odds with Catholic teaching. God is All good. Evil is a lack of God. Good and evil do not spring from one "force" as Star Wars fiction teaches. So why are these priests celebrating paganism? Leave it to Germans to succor more heresy.

Is this the Pope's idea of moving forward - his "freedom of the spirit"?

Fr. Pastor (RCC) said...

This is sad, very very sad.

Fr. Pastor (RCC) said...

I'm sure the Pope had nothing to do with this.

Fr. Pastor (RCC) said...

I wish we would! There are still some silly stunts. I once heard a Deacon tell a joke at Christmas which made me call him in and reprimand him. It had to do with a Christmas Tree and Santa Claus. He continued with his nonsense, including his loud recommendation that people use condoms. I finally had him removed from the Parish.

Maybe not directly, Father but this is happening on his watch. And it is not new. There are at least three popes who share culpability in the actions of the priest in this sacrilege.

This whole world is going nuts and I wanna leave as soon as possible!!! I hate it anymore ... the people living here aren't sane anymore!!!

I'm very sorry for this unfortunate mis-type.

CJ, Surely the Pope would not chuckle at this.
Surely as Fr. Pastor says, the Pope Francis would
find this very very sad. Surely.

Are there any Catholics left in Germany outside of the SSPX? This farce would drive anyone away from the Church. And for the big question: Is anyone (like say the Pope) going to do anything about this? I thought the carnival is supposed to be over.

With or without the Star Wars Mass, I detect a spirit of Pantheism, Deism, and probably a lot of other isms swaying the Church like a hurricane and earthquakes--uprooting,breaking off, sweeping away of old truths still valid--
Leaving people spiritually homeless, devastated etc, etc.The Church hesitates to teach Hell or Purgatory as a truth, or give remedies for avoiding these places. It downplays devotion to the Saints( which St Bernard says is necessary for salvation), I go on and on so I stop .You fill in the blanks.

The Pope will hopefully deal with it, but this is only one of the many abuses that happen during the Holy Liturgy. Im also sure the Pope would not support this at all.

Holy Mother Church and the Jewish People before us, have adapted, co-opted baptised and inculturated pagan, natural religion practices since God began choosing the Hebrew people. The 40-day rhythm of the calendar year, Patrick taking the Fire of Tara to make it Easter Fire, musical instruments for worship, the trappings of Empire for the Papacy and entire Church. These children had a Star Wars theme for first communion preparation. How was it handled? Did they learn, were their catechists and the parish priest of four parishes capable of making a subtle transition to marry popular culture with the Sacred Eucharist. My trouble today as a retired professor and active Catholic is to dissuade people from trying to teach Greek philosophy to prove that we believe in "transubstantiation" when we actually believe that THIS IS MY BODY/MY BLOOD. Biblically part of Sacrifice from killing animals to Passover to Eucharist. Some cynics insist we practice cannibalism, former members who never got it apparently! I really have a time with those who know no History and cannot see how externals can be sacramentals, leading us to Mystery. Oil, water, bread, perhaps a mystical sword?

Would he find this sad? Has he found it sad in the past when such things have been done? Have his predecessors? Insane abuses have been widely publicized and there is no way that he is not aware of them over the years.

How sad was Pope Benedict over the Sodomy sacrilege that took place EVERY WEEK in California by the "Sisters of Indulgence" drag queens? I know for a FACT that Anthony Gonzalez and the other Catholic men who exposed that scandalous sacrilege compiled a complete portfolio of those activities complete with videos and HAND DELIVERED IT in Rome. I believe Cardinal Burke was the one who received it. Those sick perverts are STILL abusing the Holy Eucharist every week so just how "sad" was Pope Benedict?

The popes didn't need to be "sad". They needed to be justifiably MAD and act like a manly, rightously enraged pope and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

If all this nuttiness is getting on your nerves some-

Ain't holding breath, Well said. I am one of those
who sometimes seek consolation by telling myself that the Pope can't be everywhere and sadly can't
rely on his Bishops. But the Pope could do something
real and quick about the where and who that he knows about. Do you think that Cardinal Burke passed the materials on or passed on them?

Bring back the Inquisition, please. Anybody who finds this amusing or cute is depraved. No wonder the faithful are leaving the Catholic church for the neighborhood Community Churches and Assemblies of God. Idiots like these priests (and liturgists) are the TRUE enemies of the faith; they do more damage to the Church than Henry VIII and Luther. Thank God there remain the Eastern Rites and Orthodox Church.

Despite I'm a StarWars fan I can't accept this type of "pastoral" tricks. I'm curious if they preparation for their first communion was sufficient and if they made a confession. This is the the only important question.

groovsmyth said...

HermitTalker, you seem to be an educated person considering your credentials. How is it that you cannot discern inappropriate denigration of Liturgy? What part of NO IMPROVISATION do you and the pastor of 4 parishes not understand? If intellectual exposition is necessary, the homily is the medium. Vamping on a theme with secular pop culture is not an example that would ever edify the precious souls of seven-year-olds entrusted to pastors no matter how much this stifles the "creativity" and flair of Mass presiders. The pastor's behavior makes me think an inquiry into the content of his catechists' syllabus is in order as well.

Anonymous said...

Mr. groovsmyth, You have a good point but are Mr.
Campbell and the pastor the same person?

Anonymous said...

Right.

An inquisition is called for. The Vatican is letting
the Church diminish without interference, a dereliction of duty. I'm sorry to say this but these
world youth days are not at all what they should be.
I don't think they should be at all. Too much mis-spent resources. And making more new New Catholics.

It's not the only important question. The important question is the Domino Reality.

This farce is blasphemous. It is the reason I have left the Roman Catholic Church after 70 years. I have been accepted into the never changing Orthodox Church and am blessed to to ancient rituals and traditions upheld with no messing around with the liturgy. If the Catholic church just wanted to make the Tridentine Mass more clear to the Catholics all they had to do was take the English translation from the Missal and use that for the Mass. Instead, they ripped the Mass apart, minimized it to make it Protestant, moved the Holy Tabernacle to the side or completely out of the Churches. I am so glad I am out of this mess. When is the Pope and the Bishops going to wake up and forget this inclusiveness at the cost of Holiness.

For those who want to understand why desecrations like these are happening in the churches of today, copy & paste the link http://emperoremmanuel.com/page.php?slug=temp_eight_content&cid=88. It was an eye-opener!

Are we sure it was definitely a blessing and not just a prop during the homily?

Pope Paul VI's M.C., Virgilio Cardinal Noè, recently explained the Holy Father's comment "The Smoke of Satan" in Liturgy: "He spoke of the smoke of Satan because he maintained that those priests who turned Holy Mass into dry straw in the name of creativity, in reality were possessed of the vainglory and the pride of the Evil One. So, the smoke of Satan was nothing other than the mentality which wanted to distort the traditional and liturgical canons of the Eucharistic ceremony." ANY personal "creativity" other than vocal inflection imposes the vanity of the celebrant over the person of Christ in Liturgy. Some priests think the Holy Mass is a forum or a venue for their own ideas or "showmanship."

Anonymous said...

You mean like this? This is much worse than vanity.

I agree with you too. But maybe the priest is telling them comparing Star Wars(sci-fi myth) to Christ(the Truth) like what the early church did with the pagan religions.

Do you work for the NSA?

Caryn S said...

That's not how Church hierarchy works! The bishops are in control of this and they are the ones who should be dealing with this. The Pope can speak out about these things, and does, but it's the bishop's responsibility to deal with this. Stop blaming the Pope!

Anonymous said...

I just saw this post, hence it's revival.
I believe the comments are too soft!

First of all, those priests should be ex communicated! How dare they try to do bring fun at a church? Don't they know that mass should be boring and said in a dead language no one understands? Bringing in a light saber; these priests deserve the electric chair.

No, better yet, like someone suggested, the Inquisition. Hey, not only will there be less unemployment with all the deaths, but at long last Catholics will get the return of the blood baths, Hurray! (because 500 years worth of killing wasn't bad enough the first time around, let's start over to truly kill the Catholic faith and spirit!)

And indeed where is the Pope? Why is this not his n°1 priority? I mean forget about all the pedophilia cases, and the mafia money in the Vatican bank or the synod... A 1rst Communion with a light saber should be the number one priority, above ALL else. What is the Pope thinking?!?

And I agree with the comments, a priest who tries to communicate with the youth with Star Wars is the real evil and an enemy to the Church. Better to bring back all the priests who raped kids, but never brought a light saber to mass. This would be a real improvement.

And you are all right, let's talk more about Hell and Purgatory, that is what the Catholic faith is all about right? Forget that Jesus gave us only 2 commandments (love God above all else and love your neighbor like yourself) and let's say it's all about fear. You know what, the Catholic Church could bring about plenary indulgences again! How fun would that be? And not at all a scam...

Come on people, for all we know this picture is just tampered with, so let the Pope do his job, take a deep breath and chill...
