The Midwest Puppets of Doom Liturgy

Edit: no matter how many times people tell you this stuff is purely, mostly mythical or rare, it just keeps returning and doesn't go away.  Like an untreated cancer, it festers and grows. This is purely revolutionary, and if any care is given, the treatment is largely cosmetic and ephemeral.  As soon as the bad authoritarian Bishop and his henchmen are gone, the dog returns to his vomit.

If anyone still cares, we didn't bother contacting the Diocese, because they're well aware that dissent runs rampant and unchecked.  You can call Father John Paul Erickson at the Archdiocese Worship Office to complain, e-mail or call (651) 290-1633.

This is the Soho Parish of St. Joan of Arc in Minneapolis Minnesota, which is headed by Fr. Jim DeBruycker, Pastor, jdebruycker@stjoan.com,\.  The "Liturgy" was celebrated for Palm Sunday with giant puppets of doom as it was reported by the  Red  Minneapolis Star and Tribune.

Almost 40 Years of This

Also contact to complain:

4537 3rd Ave. So.
Minneapolis, MN 55419

Phone: 612.823.8205
Fax: 612.825.7028

And when they're not abusing the Liturgy, they're stomping on Catholic doctrine and practice.

Is this really a Catholic church??? Is this really a priest?? Purporting to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass??? Diabolical.

That's it, I'm attending Divine Liturgy at my local Ukrainian parish.

This is just... What the hell is this, The Lion King?

If you're not feeling anything either for or against this, you're just letting this happen and you're a part of the problem.

You hear that, USCCB? You're part of the problem. You hear that, Congregation of Worship, or whatever you're called? You're part of the problem.

Short of setting buildings on fire and other acts of terrorism, what are some constructive solutions we can have? Move to other parishes. Vote with your feet. Have many children, tell them to keep away from Fr. So-and-so the moment he lets these puppets in. DON'T GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR MONEY, they're like New York bums, you give them a little and they act like you owe them something.

If enough people complain, they do something, and then some of the local enabler bloggers will whine about Liturgical Police.

Lynda, I have been hearing about the evil that goes on at St Joan's for almost ten years. And this puppet show is not the worst of it.

Anonymous, we tried fleeing to the Ruthinian, the Ukrainian and the. Maronnite. They are at least quieter...well almost...but they still dress like they are going to a yard sale and that includes the priest's family. His sons wore shorts and his unveiled wife wore jeans. And all. Ut the Maronites (since they never left the Church like the others did) have unCatholic attitudes towards the Roman Rite. They behave like redheaded stepchildren. And another thing. We never saw pro-life work in any of those parishes. But they did include a pro-abort politician's photo and best wishes in their parish yearbook. How nice.

The FFI get a hostile apostolic visitation, these guys get...?

You mean this type of local bloggers? http://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/articles/item/516-neo-catholicism-a-comprehensive-definition-on-wikipedia

What a glorious and truthful condemnation of those (lower-case) catholic enablers who defend and make excuses for these flaggelum-wielders who daily scourge the Body of Christ.

Pray the Archbishop gets a spine and ends this blasphemy. I am sure he is surrounded by enemies. It is a mess but the job has to be done.
And in doing the right thing will come persecution and false accusations but those things cannot deter a true shepherd who must, like Christ, be willing to lay down his life (or reputation).

Diabolical indeed, all the more because of the real presence - God, in the flesh, mocked...

This is not the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is a diabolical mockery of Our Lord and His Holy Sacrifice. It is a most extreme sacrilege. The "priest" ought to be removed from ministry immediately and the Church made sacred again. Where is the Bishop??

Anonymous said...

So, anon, are you having issues with the liturgy, or the people whose business you have no right to mind? Are you one of those people who don't believe in God unless everyone else is dressed their best and giving their all to God?

It is better to be a light in the world than to curse at the darkness.

The Ukrainian Parish I go to don't have head-covered women, and I find it more spiritually healthy than, say, a parish filled with people who look at you and think poorly of you for lack of charity. Because, surprisingly, that's one of the issues I find with my local Novus Ordo parish. Unless you think like them and accept the hand-wavy happy-clappy crowd, you're some sort of heretic pharisee.

And so, I dread any traditional community that has the same mindset, because they're probably dwindling in numbers as well.

A Vibrant Parish Community. And a video message from Cardinal Dolan.

I am with you! So what if the Saints would'nt even recognize what you call a mass! Who cares? All those rosary beads and veils are old skool and soooooo retro. I much prefer the Puppets of Doom novus ordo shows. I have an idea for a liturgical show where we all dress like surfers and all the gays dance around the Cranmer Table while singing "Where The Boys Are".

I will take a pious New Breed type like yourself over any old real Catholic. After all! Who is holier than thou?!

The Bishop in Minneapolis, John C. Nienstedt, has been fighting a very hard fight for orthodoxy there. The liberals hate him and will do anything to undermine his position. I met some Catholic from there who considered themselves conservative, yet they didn't even like him because he was too orthodox, too liturgical and not pastoral enough. Todays conservative Catholic is yesterdays liberal Catholic. The most recent attack on him was an attempt to have him jailed for pedophilia for accidentally bumping a boy in a group photo. He was proved innocent. Currently he is keeping his head low because of the head hunters from the Vatican. With the times the way they are, I am afraid that conservative bishops who move too fast or push too hard will find themselves in hot water.

I noticed that any conservative Bishop now is being attacked for anything the liberals can find. Right now I see several Bishops in hot water for construction work on diocese buildings. Oddly the liberal bishops can spend hundreds of millions and nothing is ever said, but a conservative bishop spends 100 thousand dollars on a expansion that was donated for that specific reason is burned at the stake.

Truth be told, the hypothetical "The Saints Wouldn't Recognize That Mass if the Came Back" is ridiculous.

Do you think St. John Chrysostom would recognize or approve of St. Gregory's Mass, or the CHANGES made by Pope Pius V, or the CHANGES made by Popes Pius XII and John XXIII?

Give me a break, this is all a mask of ignorance and bigotry by those hypocrites who selectively choose what they consider "tradition" while (even if rightfully) making fun of idiots who really don't know any better.

If this bashing and outrage against this idiotic puppetry really worked, why does it still occur? Is it that for all your outrage and feelings of superiority, you are really ineffective at bringing about change from this sort of thing?

I mean, come on, well know all the saints spoke Latin, and they all went to masses that had altar rails, and all the women had lace veils!

In fact, during the Last Supper, all the Apostles knelt when receiving the bread, and the chalice was made of gold, and there was Gregorian Chant, and everyone wore suits and ties.

Tancred said...

I heard they wandered around the sanctuary with tambourines, tie dye t-shirts with long hair and Birkenstocks.

Such a parish is a cancer and what they do there under the banner of "Catholic" is diabolical and blasphemous. And this has been going on for some 10 years? I bet you the Apostles and the Church Fathers and the Saint Bishops would not have allowed this for one blasted minute. They would not be worried about the safety of their own persons. They would be fighting for the honor of Jesus Christ and the salvation of souls. And the head hunters of the Vatican be d....d!

Tancred said...

I've seen Liturgical abuses at this parish in the early 80s, but certainly since the 70s.

Anonymous said...

Obviously, they didn't do both. Did Jesus and the Apostles wear long hair like dirty hippies? I don't know, but I'm sure they, observant Jews, weren't clean-shaven like pagan gods.

Shockingly, they might have been lying down at the table, because that's how people ate in the Mediterranean in the 1st century. The three synoptic Gospels even referred to it.

It doesn't mean that we should go back to the priest lying down during mass, nor does it mean we should discount centuries of changes authorized by the Church. The Church is God's authority on Earth, right? Except when it's not? That's where trouble begins.

The Novus Ordo was authorized by the Church, and I have argued so much in so many blogs for the return of the Latin Mass and the abolition of the Novus Ordo, but there's an insistence on the authority of the Bishop over the issue.... So there's that. Even the Summorum Pontificum apparently can be ignored. So there's that.

I mean, even when the Masses in Rome were still in Greek, it wasn't as if the pope at the time suddenly realized that they should conduct it in Latin. There was no "Bugnini Commission" that made the changes overnight, it was more gradual and organic. That's why the reform made by Pope Pius V wasn't that severe, it just got rid of things that contributed to abuse and superstition regarding the Mass (Hence no more curtains, obstructive Chancel/Rood Screens, etc. in the altar.) which had accumulated through out the 1,000 year development of Western Christianity. It didn't help that there were iconoclastic Protestants raising all sorts of issues that made Rome think again.

So... Are we supposed to be like Protestants now? Accusing Rome of heresy and idolatry, and whatnot? Or just do what we always do, and shut up and take abuse from people calling themselves "catholics" while participating in things like what we see now?

See, this is beyond what you wear at Mass, Latin-and-vernacular, orientem-versus-populum, this is about authority and what the laity can do when they see sacrilege and can't do anything about it- are we to correct our supposed teachers, or is that too out-of-line? Will they even listen?

If I can't go anywhere but in "Masses" like that... I just look down and read the 1962 Roman Missal that I always bring whenever Father feels creative, and I can't just walk out without causing scandal.

Just this Palm Sunday, they had a Passion Play inside the Church instead of reading the Passion and having a sermon. It pissed me off, and at that point it didn't matter to me what people were wearing, it was just beyond articulating the sort of sadness one can get when the faith becomes entertainment or a hobby. And I just do what I can to avoid freaking out and setting buildings on fire and kidnapping priests and bishops so Rome would accept my demands.

You should go to Asia and see the typical Masses they have there.

With some noble exceptions, It's not pretty.

Tancred said...

That's all hunky dory. Hats off to you, I think. But the Mass has never been a trivial Sunday entertainment venue and all kinds of wishful thinking by archaizing Liturgists with bold plans don't make it so.

Anonymous said...

It's silly to get excited about this because this community is not associated with either the Roman Catholic or Orthodox church. They have Catholic in their name only.

Anonymous said...

I remember hearing about this community. They have women priests, and calling themselves "Holy Spirit Catholic Church" or something deceptively innocent.

Damask Rose said...

God help Bishop Nienstedt. The Liberals sure are fired up now.

Damask Rose said...

Good grief, Anon. ...So the puppet show's not the worst of it...
How can the priest say the Mass like that? Paganism.

Bring back the Inquisition, please.

@ Anon April 15, 2014 at 2:50 AM - I am Greek Catholic and live in an Eastern European country. No woman wears the veil at Divine Liturgy (except perhaps in some remote rural areas, in which wearing the veil is not neecesarily worn in church, but in everyday life ).Does that mean that everybody is irreverent? And btw I also happen to know a few priest's wives, they don't always wear skirts. But they are always there in the parish and help the community. Don't judge the parish according to the priest wife's outfit.

They're in communion. Catholics in good standing. The bishop will do nothing.

Unfortunately in the 1950s in some places in UK, France & Germany, for example, some bright progressives were already conducting liturgical experiments all of which were entirely in disobedience of the properly constituted ecclesiastical authority. The NO is the child of protestantism which is the breeding-ground for mass-revolt against The Roman Catholic Church.

Tancred said...

Pius Parsch, Virgil Michel, Dom Beauduin were at it long before that.

LeonG said...

Not at all. Most NO churches hold permutations of the protestant Pauline Mass which are replete with subtle and some very unsubtle illicit practices as well as the invalidating criteria for non-Masses.

Dolan for Pope? You should have seen the homosexual "art" exhibit at the beautiful St. Paul the Apostle Church in Manhattan. Father Martinez needs our prayers. The exhibit was WITHIN the Church. Dolan allowed it and did nothing.
