Today the Pope announces a new Consistorium for November 24th -- at the feast of Christ the King.
(kreuz.net) At the end of the General Audience Pope Benedict XVI. announced a new Consistorium.
On Saturday, the 24th of November, he will name six new Cardinals:
- The Prefect of the Papal House, James Micheal Harvey (63) to Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Before the Walls.
- The Maronite Patriarch Béchara Boutros Rai (72) of Antioch, Lebanon.
- The Syro-Malabar Archbishop Baselaios Cleemis Thottunkal (53) of Trivandrum in India
- Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan (68) of Abuja in Nigeria.
- Arcibhsop Ruben Salazar Gomez (70) of Bogota, Colombia.
- Archbishop Luis Antonio Table (55) of Manila, Philippines.
119 Voting Cardinals
The coming Consistorium is the fifth for Benedict XVI.
With that, the number of Cardinals climbs to 211.
At the end of November there will be 120 under eighty years of age, and thus are prepared, to elect the new Pope at the next Conclave.

He'll get a hat in time. I find it more interesting that the Holy Father did not name ++Nichols of Westminster a cardinal.

Surely, though, there must be some other way to discipline a viper like Nichols other than withholding a red hat? The Holy Father presumably has a telephone and does presumably know how to use it. Why then does he not use his full Apostolic authority and ORDER Nichols to cease his homo-masses?
The usual answer to that is that the Pope is afraid of a de facto schism. Well, so what? We already have a de facto schism if creeps like Nichols are still in power. Cleaning out the stables should, one would hope, be high on the pontiff's to-do list. Yes, there are sinister forces around him, forces which we layfolk probably could not imagine. But he still has the power of the Keys, if only he would use them.
I am grateful for his issuance of Summorum Pontioficum; I am not grateful for his elevation of a nonentity like Dolan (or, worse, Wuerl) to the Cardinalate. I applaud his efforts to bring fine music back into the Liturgy; I am appalled at his craven, almost grovelling attitude to Jewish power (a power that would evaporate would he but use his great Office to promote the Faith unambiguously).
There are simply too many contradictions in this man. Who can understand him? Just the other day he appoints Dolan - Dolan, for God's sake! - to act as a peace emissary to Syria. Dolan, who is so unserious and uninformed sent into a situation which requires delicacy. Astonishing. How many more qualified Latin or Melkite Patriarchs could Benedict have sent, far more appropriately, to Syria? A dozen at least. But, no: he sends a mediocrity like Dolan, who will no doubt laugh and make merry while the USA he worships continues to back the rebels who are murdering his fellow-Christians.
It is a cliche to say, "pray for the Pope". But what else is there to do?
I can understand him no more than I understand St. Pius X who lowered the age of first communion and relaxed disciplines to make room for the daily communicant, and in his own right, tolerated evil Bishops every bit as contemptible as ++Nichols, ++Wuerl, ++Weakland, ++Mahony and so on.
There must be some genius at work here, but I'm not really understanding it.
In any event, if you're a Traditionalist Catholic, you've got just as much of a hard time reconciling previous Popes and their renegade clergy as we do today. For my part, I'm going to keep on keeping on and doing my best to live the Catholic Faith given to me on down from the Apostles and Our Lord.
