No Obligatory Memorial For John XXIII. and John Paul II.

(Vatican) As reported , the Osservatore Romano published the decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship ,in its Friday edition with the liturgical observances for the two popes canonized in late April popes.  It is optional, not mandatory to observe.
The Church commemorates Pope John XXIII. on 11 October and Pope John Paul II. on 22 October. Both dates apply to the liturgical calendar of the new rite. The Saints were declared last April 27 by Pope Francis. The two popes belong with fifteen other popes along with the Prince of the Apostles, Peter, to the saints of the Catholic Church.

Observances of the Newly Sainted  Popes not Mandatory

While all of the canonized saints are recorded in the Roman Martyrology , not all are included in the  Calendarum Romanum  Generale. In the  Roman Calendar only those saints are included, whose remembrance apply because of their universal significance for the world Church. Thus the Church distinguishes between the "memoria obbligatoria", which is commanded, and the "memoria ad libitum", which is not commanded. For the saints of particular importance for the World Church the Roman calendar provides for mandatory festivals. The fest days for other saints may be included "at discretion" in a celebration, but should not be celebrated.

Pope Pius X Is the Only Pope of  the Second Millennium with With an Obligatory Feast

Since September 12, the Church has recognized seventeen popes, who are recognized in the General Roman Calendar, but only four of them possess an mandatory feast.  Three of the four are from the first Christian millennium: St. Gregory the Great (3 September), the Saint Cornelius (September 16, together with the Holy Cyprian), and the  Saint Leo the Great (November 10). Only one holy Pope, whose memory is binding on the universal Church, comes from the second Christian millennium, Saint Pius X (August 21).
The other canonized popes, including John XXIII. and John Paul II., have inclusion in the General Roman Calendar, but their memorials are   not binding. With the exception of the two thereto, and to two other popes, the saints of Gregory VII. (May 25), and Saint Pius V. (April 30), they all belong to the early Christian centuries.
They are Saint Fabian (20 January), the Saint Martin I. (13 April), St. John I. (May 18), Saint Sixtus II. (August 7), Saint Pontian (13th August, along with the antipope Hippolytus of Rome), the Saint Calixtus I. (Oct. 14), Saint Clement I. (November 23), the Saint Damasus I. (December 11), and the Saint Sylvester I ( December 31).

Canonization Without Miracles and Church Politicis -- Capovilla: Says John XXIII. Not the "Sweet-Natured Pope"

(Rome) John XXIII., the Pope who convened the Second Vatican Council and is to be canonized without a miracle in a few days by Pope Francis.  He was commonly known in the collective memory as the "good" and "sweet-natured" Pope .  In contrast, his personal secretary Loris Capovilla is protesting: "Please, don't call him the good-natured Pope. '"

 Monsignor Loris Capovilla was the personal secretary of John XXIII. during his pontificate.  This past February 22nd, Pope Francis made him a cardinal.  Capovilla, born in 1915, has become since then the oldest living Cardinal.

He's been 50 years fighting against this appellation of John XXIII., as the "Good Pope" or "sweet-natured Pope," Cardinal Capovilla has been giving  a few interviews  for the canonization of Pope Roncalli.   The figure of John XXIII. says Capovilla,   is being overwhelmed by this "good nature", said Capovilla, because Pope Roncalli was "very determined" and had been primarily  "for the Church and the world and  peace, of great importance.  His greatest importance is connected to the Second Vatican Council," said Capovilla in the newspaper Eco di Bergamo.

 Again the almost century-old cardinal insisted with particular emphasis, on the similarity between John XXIII. and Pope Francis. Francis reminds  people "very" much of Pope Roncalli, says Capovilla.   The Argentine cardinal had wanted to call himself for a moment even John XXIV.  "Pope Francis and John are very similar.  Cardinal Bergoglio had thought to take the name John.  He wanted to be the successor of John XXIII.    But he also thought of Francis.  Then he spoke to the Brazilian Cardinal Damasceno and advised him to adopt a name that speaks for the poor and of poverty. So Bergoglio has opted for Francis.  But Pope John was in his thoughts."


Canonizations as Motivated by Church Politics?

Pope Francis, it can also be said,  that he very rarely mentions the turning point in history of  the Second Vatican Council is a point of distinction.    This includes the collection of Cardinal Loris Capovilla on February 22, whose merit it is mainly to have been the secretary of John XXIII.   and to have been  a   tireless exponent of the "epochal significance" of Vatican II.  This primarily involves the canonization of John XXIII.  on April 27, bypassing the canonically prescribed standards.  Two events with which Pope Francis contends in the large intra-church conflict, on the one hand  John XXIII and Paul VI., on the other hand, John Paul II and Benedict XVI.   The canonization of John XXIII.  is ultimately a product of chance  in internal  Church circles, which is directly related to the canonization of John Paul II.

The no Longer Preventable Raising of John Paul II to the Altars

Shortly after Cardinal Bergoglio was elected Pope, the Congregation of Saints convened on the 2nd of July, 2013  to acknowledge the miracle that paved the way for the canonization of the Polish Pope.   The schedule was at the time of the election already fixed.  This was only a formality, since the examination and approval of the miracle had already taken place by both medical as well as theological side.    Thus, it was clear that the canonization would take place within a year.  Only an administrative act by  the new pope,   would have been able to prevent what would, however, his opposition in substantial parts of the church, and not only of Poland would have been  introduced with  the John Paul II as a reference point. The idea that he of all people should raise John Paul II to the altars  is a visible gain in the validity  of his understanding of the Church seems not to have been savored by the Argentine Pope.

Causa Johannes XXIII.:  Neutralize the "Poles" Canonize the Council

So  Pope Francis quickly placed  it on the agenda of the Congregation of Saints.   However, there is for the Roncalli Pope to date, no recognized miracle.   When Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to Pope Francis went to tell him the decision of the Congregation on the Polish Pope, John Paul II,  the new pope also unexpectedly decided to canonize the Council Pope. 

 How this could happen without a miracle, has been rather met with an ashamed silence  in Rome.   The official media of the Holy See has never broached the subject and most accredited to the Vatican press journalists have somewhat averted both eyes, because it is the "sweet-natured Pope", who, after all, convened the Council.

Both large Postconciliar "Souls" of the Church Equal? –   Only Superficially

On 27 April, in a sense, both big "souls" of the Catholic Church, who represented a contrasting understanding of the Church since the Council, are raised to the altars.   Thus the impression.  The sarting point, however, was that the canonization of John Paul II was already too advanced at the time of the election of Pope Francis to put it on the back burner still.  However, for Pius IX und Pius XII. and Pius XII.   this has been the case for decades. The beatification of Pius IX. in 2000   had become possible only in a church-political maneuver.  It was wrested in return for the beatification of John XXIII.   
The double canonization of popes on April 27, 2014 will go down in the first place as an object lesson  ecclesiastically politically motivated decisions in the history of the Church.

“In Order to Understand the ‘Aggiornamento’, One Must Dig Deeply.” -- All of the Journals of John XXIII. to be Published

(Rome) Pope John XXIII. (1958-1963) who after years of silence is getting  new attention. This has led to the coincidence of two events: 50 years of Vatican II and the election of Pope Francis, whom some associate significantly with the counciliar Pope. These include the former secretary of Pope Roncalli, Monsignor Loris Capovilla,  who received his cardinal’s hat  from Pope Francis.  Cardinal Capovilla claimed recently that Pope Francis had originally even wanted to be called John XXIV.  This is a version that is doubted in Rome, but fits well in a particular image.
The elevation of the 93 year old Capovilla to cardinal as well as the wonderfully  loose canonization of John XXIII. next 27 April is regarded as Church policy efforts to satisfy those on the "progressive" side of the Church.  The pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI are particularly criticized  as a "restoration attempt.”  Monsignor Capovilla is devoted to his literary work, especially the life and work of Pope Roncalli and in this context the Second Vatican Council .

Church Political Rehabilitation of the Conciliar Spirit against "Restoration"

The common canonization of Pope John Paul II  and the Conciliar Pope,  makes for less of a  "happy medium"  but the thwarting of  the canonization of the Polish Pope, whose process was so far advanced with the recognition of a miracle would have caused too much irritation with a delay.
In view of the unexpected canonization of John XXIII. the new and complete edition of all the diaries of Pope Roncalli has now been published. Copies of the annotated and edited edition will receive a selection of major libraries and all the Apostolic Nunciature of the world.

"I love them in Jesus crucified and it is painful that Christians speak so ill about them and thus prove how little the gospel has penetrated into their souls. I love them, because the part of my office is, as a father, as a shepherd and as Apostolic Delegate: I love them because I believe they are called to salvation. I know that the spirit of many of my Western Catholic children is against me. But this has neither disturbed me nor discouraged me "(entry of 27 July 1936).

The New Cardinals: Whom Pope Francis Desired, Whom Not

(Vatican) At the end of the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis announced the names of the new cardinals earlier than expected, that on 22 February he will raise cardinals during his first extraordinary conistoriums of  his pontificate. There will be 19 new cardinals, 16 of which will be eligible to vote in a conclave and thus are under 80 . What can be read out of the appointments? In which direction is the  Argentine Pope aiming?

No More "Automatic" Cardinals 

The appointments follow largely what had already predicted (see separate report , The New Cardinals by Pope Francis - Essay on  Topography ). The list of newly appointed cardinals shows that Pope Francis does not intend to observe the Archbishop seats  that are connected from ancient times to the dignity of Cardinal. At least not those of the so-called First World. The Pope makes his decisions as he wants, as as an autocratic ruler. So in engaging the Petrine ministry he shall serve it more extensively than his predecessors, especially Pope Benedict XVI. The certainty with which the  archbishops had previously automatically counted on the dignity of cardinal, no longer exists. This will affect especially Italy, the USA and Belgium this time. Among those unrecognized is the Archbishop of Turin, Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia. Italy will no longer have in future eight resident cardinals   in the conclave. This does not mean that it might not happen to the archbishop of Lyon, Vienna, Munich or Barcelona tomorrow.

South Axis

Second, the pope is moving the axis in the direction of the church senate to the southern hemisphere. He has taken the first step,   should he maintain the cut, the next conclave will be much of Latin America, Africa and Asia. Those not  considered  included the Eastern Churches united with Rome, especially the martyred churches of the Middle East, but also the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Third,  the first appointment round shows a directional decision. Pope Francis is continuing his distance towards the understanding of the Church Benedict XVI.. What the German theologian Pope accomplished against fierce opposition, the renewal of the Catholic Church by returning to the essentials, especially in the liturgy, the two thousand years of tradition, and the interpretation of the Second Vatican Council away from decomposing experiments and destructive fractures towards a recovery of the continuity, the new Pope wants to cancel possible. After restructuring the staff  of the Roman Curia, which is still in progress, the Ratzingerianers have also been significantly excluded in the cardinal appointments. This refers to those church leaders who were close in a special way to the predecessor Pope in representing his line. This is especially true for the Patriarch Francesco Moraglia of Venice and Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard of Mechelen-Brussels. Especially in Belgium, where the church is suffering from the sustained bombardment by radical opponents of the Church, and Archbishop Leonard has already had to endure numerous scandalous attacks against his person, including two Femen attacks, this recognition would have been a signal of his  support and assistance in the Cardinal's stand. Pope Francis has since appointed  the less exposed Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster as cardinal, who had been recently reprimanded for the toleration of "homo-Mass" by the Congregation, speaks against Archbishop Leonard not for the fact that he heads a European diocese, but his "conservative" disposition.

The "Protégé" and the Church Policy of Francis

It has already been speculated that the Pope could use the cardinal surveys to also drive Italian church policy, though he had just explained the withdrawal of the Pope from the Catholic Bishops' Conference applied to his program. While traditional seats like the Archbishop of Turin and Venice in particular came up empty-handed, the one because he is Italian, the other because he belongs to the Italians and in the wrong direction, an Italian bishop was raised to cardinal, heading no "cardinalatial" diocese. Archbishop Gualtiero Bassetti of Perugia is Vice-President of the Italian Bishops' Conference for Central Italy and is considered a "protégé" of the Pope. Although Pope Francis suggested to waive his prerogative to appoint the chairman and the secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference, he appointed recently not only a new secretary, but did it against any practice in complete isolation. He appointed Archbishop Bassetti,  a member of the Congregation for Bishops, and his elevation to the cardinal  state nowadays suggests that he soon wants to replace the current President of the Italian Bishops' Conference  appointed by  Benedict XVI., Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco by Bassetti. 
Archbishop Bassetti took part in a 2011 liturgy by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in a celebration of Mass in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, in which two sisters of the Institute took their  perpetual vows with his blessing. In the same year he celebrated Holy Sacrifice of the Mass itself in the Old Latin in Perugia, where the Franciscans of the Immaculate assisted him at the altar.
The same as in Italy with the affront Patriarch Moraglia and the appointment of Archbishop Massetti happened in the Philippines. Instead appointing  Archbishop Jose S. Palma vo Cebu to  the chief shepherd of the largest Archdiocese and Chairman of the Philippine Bishops' Conference of the Catholic-rich island nation, Pope Francis chose the Pastor of a subordinated Archdiocese, which has never been connected to the dignity of Cardinal.
With Bishop Chibly Langlois from the Caribbean island of Haiti we find a purple bearer who doesn't even possess an archbishopric.

Monsignor Capovilla and the Signal-like Award for the Council

Among the three "personally" appointed cardinals,  priests and theologians  who have already completed their 80th year of life and are no longer eligible to vote in the conclave, falls on mainly to the 98 year old Archbishop Loris Francesco Capovilla, the talkative former personal secretary of Pope John XXIII. Pope Francis had asked him only a month after his election to Rome to meet with him. In addition to the out of protocol canonization of Pope John XXIII. is this another award for the Second Vatican Council? Emeritus Archbishop of Pamplona, ​​Monsignor Fernando Sebastián Aguilar CMF, however, is the Pope's person of trust with regard to the Church in Spain.

The Pope, not easily forget

  As expected,  the French Dominican Jean-Louis Bruguès who had fallen from grace with Pope Francis. The Pope from Argentina has already dismissed him from the Congregation of Education and sent him to the post of Librarian and Archivist of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Father Bruguès had opposed the appointment of Victor Manuel Fernandez as the Rector of the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. But the then  then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, wanted him to have this post. Fernandez is considered a special faithful companion of the current Pope and his speechwriter. Pope Francis does not forget so easily.

Consistorium set for 30th of September: Pope to Journey to Assisi

The Pope's calendar is heavy with the Cardinals meeting in the fall, the first meeting of the Commission and Assisi visit - Can't make it to Constantinople -- Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. expected in 2014

Vatican City ( / KAP) The next meeting of Cardinals, called the Consistory, is apparently taking place on September 30th in the Vatican. This is clear from the press briefing published by the Vatican Press Office, during his flight last Monday as Pope Francis was returning from World Youth Day in Brazil. At the meeting, the Cardinals will be present in Rome for the Canonization of their approval of Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) and Pope John XXIII (1958-1963) are expected.

As Francis explained in an interview with journalists, he originally wanted to meet the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I, at the end of September in Istanbul. However, this was not possible "because of my schedule". On the question of when the canonization of Pope John Paul II was to be expected, Francis then said that once the consistory takes place on September 30th. The canonization would therefore not take place probably this year, because of the foreseeable wintry weather conditions in Poland. At an ordinary consistory, the Cardinals then present in Rome come together to talk about canonization decrees or to accommodate new cardinals in the college. Extraordinary consistory all the cardinals gather in Rome to discuss special needs of the universal Church. At the far end of November 2012 last consistory, Pope Benedict XVI. appointed six new cardinals. At the consistory at the end of September there is a heavy series of important events in Rome. In early October, the Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga will chair the eight-member Cardinal commission to develop proposals for a reform of the Roman Curia on behalf of the Pope. For the 4th of October, the Pope has announced a trip to Assisi the work place and place of death of the founder and church reformer, Francis.

German Philosopher: The Council Enfeebled Catholics

Berlin ( The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) had led in the sight of philosopher Robert Spaemann to "an epoch of decline" of the Catholic Church. "The Council enfeebled Catholics",  said Spaemann in a discussion with the newspaper "Die Welt" (Friday).  "Everything became so withered."  People who deny the resurrection of Christ, could remain theology professors and preach as priests during Mass.   People, who did not want to pay the Church-tax, fled at this and left the Church. "That's something that just can't be."

The Church Universal had become a part of the cultural revolution in western states and led to an "assimilation" of the Church to the secular world, criticized Spaemann.  The then Pope John XXIII. had called the reform Council given it over to update the Church's challenge to the world, "which it had always given and must always will give", said the philosopher.  "That is the opposite of assimilation."

Spaeman attested that the Council was exaggerated in its attempt to harmonize.  Everything was eliminated from the  hymn books which pointed to struggle and conflict.  "We wanted to bless the emancipatory and culturally revolutionary Zeitgeist."  The commandment "Love thy enemies" doesn't make sense any more today because the word "enemy" is offensive.  "For so-called progressive Catholics there is actually only one boogeyman:  the Traditionalist."

Spaemann also complained that the sovereignty of jurisdiction over the Council is held by innovators, who construed everything falsely.  So the Church Universal for example vehemently defends celibacy and confirms Latin as the actual Liturgical language of the Western Church. Both will be represented differently today, however.
