Apparently, Tucker Carlson's interview with Putin revealed that Putin is both a religious indifferentist (a commonly Masonic viewpoint) and anti-Catholic. Putin apparently views Catholicism as both 'alien' and 'western'. That is surprising because Kievan Rus was converted to Catholicism between 867 and 988 AD. Kievan Rus was the proto-Ukraine and Russia that was governed from the City of Kiev. No wonder Putin wants to obliterate Ukraine and to pretend it has no independent existence outside of Russia. The 'great schism' between Catholicism and the Orthodox Church did not occur until 1054 AD. This means what is present day Russia was actually Catholic for 150-200 years before it became majority Orthodox. Any pretensions Russia has to being a Christian nation is entirely due to the Catholic Church. Putin likes the nationalist bent of the Russian Orthodox Church (even though it cooperated shamelessly with the communists from 1918-1991) and for this reason it is for him a unifying force in Russia. This suggests that if Putin's Russia defeats Ukraine, the 5 million Ukrainian Catholics will either be forced underground or conscripted into the Orthodox Church with the compounding loss of Catholic Churches and monasteries. Sadly, I think that Putin is just another atheistic, materialistic, Russian ultra-nationalist with communist sympathies. We really should pray for his conversion.

I never thought about Russia vs. Ukraine as "Christian" Russia up against its Catholic roots in the way you described it. Schism really is a cancer. Kind of like the North vs. the South in the American Civil War. I know Ukraine is very corrupt which reminds me of Albert Pike fighting for the South.
