When Volpi discovered they were there to see the Franciscans of the Immaculate, he told them with a malevolent sneer something about how they whipped themselves and that they should stay away.Tancredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16015531337154301560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4404498638452030181.post-44389264656133789272016-01-11T16:35:03.292-08:002016-01-11T16:35:03.292-08:00First of all, this one claim from an admittedly ag...First of all, this one claim from an admittedly aggrieved party. Normally, such claims should be treated with great skepticism. There is an obvious ax being ground here.

Secondly, I am amazed that so many purported Catholics have such disgust with practices which were embraced by numerous Saints and which have always been seen as testament to their heroic sanctity. Saint Catherine of Siena drank the puss from a horrifically stinking ulcerous wound. Many other female Saints did similarly. They did so to give testimony to their love for that person - almost always an outcast and someone reviled by others - as an image of God, even in their sickened and sickening state. Saint Josemaria Escriva took the discipline regularly, as have scores of other Saints.

This is so typical. Those attached to the world gasp and express disdain for practices of those always held in the highest esteem for their piety and devotion to God and Church. They judge entire orders on the thinnest of pretexts, giving vent to what I imagine is an already extant bias. It can be difficult for those not possessed of great virtue and faith to understand these acts, they seem repulsive to many, but they are - rightly done - a testimony to the power of Grace and the ability for souls to cooperate with it.

Having said that, it is possible for abuses to develop, though I tend to doubt they were present in the FIs based on my experience with them. At this point, I tend to agree that this is a politically motivated attempt to further discredit a great and growing order that is going through a terrible agony. These were condemned by the Church you claim to know so well for their erroneous doctrine and cruel ascetical practices. You seem obsessed with "The Remnant" (you must know why---but that would not be my business). Did they bruise your very antiseptic and effeminate ego by failing to publish one of your irrational rants? The lies and exaggerations of Protestants---like the Maria Monk fabrications---are also well known and also have nothing to do with the fact that the Church has many times indeed condemned overly harsh, cruel penitential practices, as in the case of the Jansenists who were condemned partly because of their weird penances. I certainly have not suggested that the members of the Friars of the Immaculata have engaged in these practices for I know very little about them and sympathize with their plight after the abuses of Bergoglio and company. I also suspect that the alleged excesses are distortions by the anti-clerical press. I consider the press, not the friars in question, the enemy. But the issue of morbid and excessive penances which have at times indeed been prohibited by the Church (it is you who needs a few lessons in Church history regarding this issue as well as some other lessons in logic and deductive reasoning). The fact that Collegeville rightly scandalizes many Catholics and that Protestants have lied in their 500-year old history about the church and conventual life has nothing to do with the absurdity of some of the penitential practices brought up by people who respond in this blog---practices mentioned specifically and which have nothing to do with sound Catholic spirituality but more perhaps with the medical condition known as religious melancholia---a sickly and bizarre mysticism. One need not be an Evangelical Protestant to know that such is against both reason and sound Faith. The Church is a good Mother---one that offers us sound ways to do penance but also admonishes us or even punishes when we fall into a sort of Manichean suspicion or even hatred of the body and the physical world. Genesis tells us that the Lord created all the physical world and saw that "it was good." It is clear the references are not to expiration dates on food (which many of us, myself included, have experienced from time to time) but on the intentional serving up of food not fit for consumption, and other such ridiculous practices that we do not find even a trace of in the great ascetic and monastic tradition of St. Benedict or other great founders of the Catholic orders. Not even St. Francis, I think, would promote unsanitary and masochistic practices for others even if he practiced rigorous asceticism himself. Glib sarcasm is the sign of someone who may indeed be overly sensitive (afflicted with a fragile ego and a sturdy hubris) and lacking a lucid, solid argument. The Church of Christ is not, nor has it ever been, a weird and cruel cult---despite some nuts who have inhabited it.
