Pope Francis Won't Be Around in Ten Years

[The Local] The 78-year-old pontiff wished them well with their bid to host the 2024 Games, but said he would not be around to watch them.

"Dear friends, best wishes for Rome's bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games," he said. "I will not be there. May the Lord bless all of you and your families."

It was not the first time the Pope, who turned 78 on Wednesday, has hinted he does not think he will last very long at the helm of the Catholic Church.

On his way back from South Korea in August he lightheartedly remarked to reporters that he may have only two or three years left to live.

At his age, Francis is just being realistic. Prophet, he's not.

The question is will the Church be around in 10 years -- after this pontificate (if you can call it that). Not that Francis seems to care about that, but perhaps he isn't spouting his usual humble selfie -me-me-me-the universe began and will end with me, but rather suggesting to the city of Rome that they may end w/him when the fire ball of God's wrath descends on ground zero and the wicked wolf of the west.

I pray he will have a holy death in a state of grace and a very short papacy.

I second that!

Many and happy years to him.

Hear! Hear! Tancred!

But I do find it rather odd that he felt the need to say that at all. Possibly an indication of narcissism or the wish to reconcile before death something he is struggling with in his soul.

It seems the more appropriate place to have mentioned his mortality would have been at then Synod. The mention seems to detract the focus and optimism from the Italian Football hosting bid to him. I hope he doesn't repeat this observations at birthday parties.

Let's keep praying for him.

Pope Francis said that he would not be around. Also please note that Christ said that he would be with us always even till the end of time. Christ is present in His Church so the Church will be here to meet him when he comes again to judge the living and the dead! It may not be in the visible form we presently have but the Church will be here!

We may disagree with the pope but never condemn him. He is the Vicar of Christ and accountable to Jesus Christ. We must be humbly obedient and pray for him as a son or daughter to his or her parents. Even if he is mistaken, His mistakes may be in good faith how are we to know the inmost thoughts of a man? God will correct the pope either through private revelation to him or in his Divine Providence, Learn and practice the Catechism of the Catholic Church and you will pass through these times in the grace of God.

The CCC is extremely long winded, dry, and boring. It isn't even a proper catechism, it's a collection of essays. The language is extremely unfriendly to the average layman, even most priests find it a torturous experience to read.

If you're gonna recommend a catechism, go with Baltimore. If you like the essay style, go with Trent or Archbishop Sheehan. The Catechism of Trent was written 500 years ago and it is more accessible (i.e. readable) and more relevant than the CCC.

If Vatican II and the New Mass is to be destroyed and condemned then Francis must live long and prosper.

Since Francis, non-Catholics and fallen away Catholics that I've met or know have no interest in conversion. On the flip side, genuine believers in the NO are becoming extremely agitated, angry, sad, confused, and so forth. More and more devout Catholics in the NO that I know are showing interest in attending the SSPX Masses, the only obstacle in most cases is travel.

For the Church to convert the world it must first convert itself. Non-Catholics have been made content in their state of life by Francis, but devout Catholics are beginning to experience never before felt feelings of righteous indignation and hatred for heresy and sacrilege. The chaff is being separated from the wheat, the gold is being purified in the fire.

Francis is God's gift to Traditional Catholicism. This is exactly the pope we need to make laymen zealous for Tradition.

Great point Anon!Personally the SSPX are no different because they accept the Vatican 2 sect as legitimate catholics. In order for anything to change for the better, conservative NOVUS ORDO types must attend true traditional catholic churches.
